Anyone else feel BEthesda is the last hope of gaming?

People need to actually buy indie games before there's even a chance for them.

But if people buy them, they grow big and become evil!

Considering the responses you're getting from Bethesda's own community, that should give you your answer.

Ask in the Skyrim forums and you'll get a very different answer ;) That's where the new fans hang out :hehe:

Every game gets some game of the year award.
They're just trying not to hurt anyone's feelings. Everyone's a winner. Like kids' sports. Or elementary school.

If you look at Bethesdas early games you get the impression they were only in for the cash early on as well and that Arena - Morrowind was the deviation.

Were any of their games not attatched to some big franchise?

I don't want to put Bethesda down...I think that they make overall good games. I think they've become "one of those big games companies," though, and I think they're the reason I get discouraged about modern gaming. As a result I think they (Bethesda) tend to start out with good ideas that end up lacking in execution. Big gaming companies tend to make big budget games, and big budget games need to sell a lot of copies to turn a profit. The feeling I get is that because of this the game companies aren't willing to take very many risks, so they end up trying to make games that appeal to as wide an audience as possible. To do that they use formulas that are proven to sell units, which results in watered-down games with way-too-familiar gameplay and high production values.

I've been gaming for a long time as well (got my first gaming machine 28 years ago), and for a while now I've felt that most of the AAA titles are essentially the same 5-10 games I've been playing for years with a fresh coat of paint slapped on them. I end up waiting until most games are dirt-cheap before buying because I don't want to pay $40+ to play a game I've - at least in some sense - played before. I think that's one of the reasons the indie scene has become so attractive...fewer people with more direct design input seems to result in more design risks taken, which leads to more original games.

Not really. Indie games, are pretty good. And blizzard didn't fail with SC2 and Diablo 3 IMO, they may have done badly in some parts, such as bnet, but it was still really good. Also, Valve seems to be doing really well, just saying.

I'm not of the opinion Bioware was ever carrying the torch for RPG's anyway, but no, Bethesda's good but there are others.

Nah thats Activision. Bobby Kotick is the messiah of gaming, you'll see. He'll part the sea of mediocre games and deliver unto us the lords bounty of next gen call of duty and guitar hero titles.

It's been so long since I last read anything about that little [censored]. Still at Activision, milking his cows. It's non-gaming-businessmen like him who mess up the gaming market and ruin our hopes.

Bethesda's really good, much better than many other companies, but no, not the last hope of gaming or anything like that. The gamers and dedicated fans are the last hope of gaming.

Bethesda is one of those game companies that only make one type of game, sure. However you do have to admit that they make awesome games of that category. I mean A lot of their games have been named game of the year, that is a real accomplishment. But I disagree with you that Bethesda is the last hope for gaming. This is because of the game companies id Software and Valve. Play Doom and/or Half-Life and tell me that it is not a great game. If you do, you'd be lying.

But I do have to admit that companies like Trearch and Infinity Ward (the main companies who have a Call of Duty game come out once a year with no change but the storyline and multiplayer maps) are making a mockery of the gaming world, let alone FPS games.

Indie games can produce good games...cough Amnesia Dark Descent...but tossing out the name Indie games is as trendy and hip as the the word Indie itself. It's so "artistic"...

Give me a break. The best hope we have for gaming is consumer demand rejecting stupid, dumbed down, DRM filled handholding and homogonization of genres and games as a whole. Because if consumer demand doesn't stop the trend by rejecting it, it will evolve and grow.

Peter Molyneux could be the messiah of the gaming world if he communicated to his team the same things he communicated to his audience.

I don't think there is a 'last hope for gaming' (as in it's not in need of a last hope), but if there had to be a last hope, I'd go with EA and Activision myself. Couldn't live without em.
