High-End Mage tips?

Post » Tue Aug 07, 2012 11:43 pm

Hey there. I've turned my attention to the mage. I am trying to figure a few things out.

I intend to get as close to 80 as possible. So I'm contemplating on whether I should aim for 250 HP - 750 MP+ or if I should keep it balanced with 500 HP - 500 MP+

I'm going to use Enchanting to do 100%+ on Destruction and add as many points to my magicka as possible instead of taking Restoration too. I feel the extra magicka would be more beneficial towards other spells.

I chose to be a Breton because I want to have a good defense as well as offense. I know the High Elf is much more suited for the role, but hey, as they say "You are what you play."

My immediate question is, should I be more balanced with my health and magicka, or is it okay to just add a butt-load of points to magicka and not so much on health?

I'm playing on Master difficulty right now, and I find myself almost always running out of magicka, and I'm very good at rationing my mana.

My other question is is it better to take another magic school instead of extra magicka or should I just stay with my magicka bonus as well as 100% destruction?

I'm also taking advantage of all the perks in the magic class. I've got just about everything. I am not going into necromancy, or I am doing atromancy, I am not spending any points on fire, frost, or shock weapon enchantments, and other than that, I'm just avoiding the three "Near death" effects in the destruction pool.

I intend to do a lot of practice outside of the magic field to accommodate with my levels. In magic alone, I have 73 perks that I intend to fill before I move onto a bit of alchemy, one point in sneaking and haggling, making 80 perks in all.

Any other advice? Let me know. I'd rather learn it now than make a mistake later.

Are you on PC? On a pure mage I do magicka 3 times in a row then two health. I'd say more magicka is better but don't lag health to far behind. You can also use enchanting add magicka and health to items.

I'm on Xbox 360. Yeah I usually do 60% health and 40% of either stamina or magicka depending on the character.

Since I'm adding magicka to the items, I should come out at around 500HP and 700+MP which is decent enough for me.

I typically use 200 for health, 100-120 for stamina and dump the rest into magicka. I also use breton, mostly because with the amount of magicka i can get with leveling and enchanting, I don't need the extra 50 from being an Altmer. With being a breton, you can have the max resistance against magic plus magic absorbtion.

My one tip is pick up the Atronach stone. The stunted magicka regen can easily be offset by the perks in Restoration, but I see you said you don't want to take restoration points, so if that is the case, you can cover for it with enchants as well, or even potions. Atronach Stone, plus Atronach from the Alteration tree is a win-win. The funny thing about is, diseases somehow count as spells for the purposes of absorption, so sometimes you will be fighting a wolf, bear, sabrecat, or other disease carrying thing and will get full mana back. It is a nice feature to have and it is also damn useful for fighting other mages, especially when your resistance is high.

Other than that, I would say put points into boosting fire damage and take advantage of creature spell weaknesses maximally. Don't forget that you can put Flames in one hand and then Flames, Firebolt, or any other Fire spell in the other. Cast Flames on your target then pepper them with the other spell. Due to them being on fire already from Flames they will take extra damage. I find that helps with rationing, especially if you just put Flames in each hand and rapidly cast them back and forth. Against creatures with fire weakness it rocks them hardcoe. As a note, if you stack all these spell absorption effects, be aware that Conjuration is glitched and having 80% spell absorb will probably mess up your ability to summon creatures.

Other than that, I would take alchemy to get mana pots. Creep cluster grows all over south of Windhelm and it is a good restore mana ingredient, along with red flowers. Grab those every chance you get. You can use Blue butterfly wings and blue flowers, adding in Giant's toes every chance you get to power level the crap out of Alchemy.

Lol don't get me wrong. I'm taking all I can out of Restoration too. Even Ward Absorb and Necromage. I didn't know the regeneration effects counter-act the atronach stone. That definately makes it worth it. Thanks for the info.
