Either will work.
A warrior will do far more damage, based on the way the game is balanced, but will have fewer long-range attack options (unless you master archery and switch a lot). To close with an enemy, you'll need to master and use the Become Ethereal or Whirlwind Sprint shouts.
A battlemage can balance magic with one hand and a weapon with the other, allowing greater versatility. Destrruction is relatively weak, but will hit distant targets. I've heard good things about Illusion, but have yet to play a character that mastered it. In either case, you have less ability to do sheer damage.
One nice thing about Skyrim's classless system is that if you do pure warrior and don't like it, you can study magic after the fact. My Imperial started as a pure Two-hander, but I wanted to diversify him, so he learned One-hand and Destruction as well. He's not as strong as he would have been if I'd started out there (due to perk allocation), but he can definitely handle himself with a variety of weapons and combat styles.
