Ward Vs Dragon Breaths

Post » Fri Aug 17, 2012 11:13 pm

Since haven't found the Spellbreaker yet, i often use wards against magicians, that works fine, but when it comes to dragons, the Elemental Protection perk is not enough to survive a single breath, and the wards "break" whenever a dragon uses fire/frost breath from too close, and my warrior gets staggered and dies most of the time.

How do i counter that?

Depents on your health or resist. (or do you play on master)

But since you have the Elemental Protection perk, i think that your health might be to low.
If not, try to increase resist magic.

Elemental Protection is a blocking perk that in no way factors into what happens to your regular wards. I can offer the following advice. First, wards take time to reach full charge for max protection. Not long, only a few seconds, but you can't start casting with a fireball coming at your face and expect it to work if you catch my drift. That breaking glass sound you hear is what happens when magic hits the ward before its ready. back up so you're not directly infront of the blast furnace, and listen for that tell tale sudden inhale just before it rips off a breath attack. This will help you get the ward up intime.
Second, dispense with the ward entirely when the dragon lands. get closer and use a sheild to bash the dragon straight in the mouth. This will imediatly stop the breath attack.
Last. invest in stronger wards. as you level so do the dragons. Their breath attacks will get stronger. Get Steadfast and Grand Ward ASAP. some enchanted items to reduce the cost of your wards will help reduce the drain on your magicka.

Ups... right.
"Elemental Protection" only works with "real shields".
like http://www.gamesas.com/user/827254-exaltedpariah/ said. Ward need a build up time. Starting to cast a ward while a dragon breath is already in motion result in fail.

Thanks, i thought it was because the spell was too strong for my ward.

I know, and if i do use a real shield, i will not survive without potions, but potions are not unlimited and i have not invested much in alchemy.

I will repeat. When the dragon lands, take that sheild and smack it like a hoker that owes you money. Instant breath fail on the part of the dragon. Heck with the respite perk you can get away with swaping your weapon for a healing spell and treating that dragon to the joys of your stun-locking pimp hand!

a well timed Lesser Ward will block out every breath attack.
Maybe except Ancient and up but for the most part a Lesser ward is all you need to block them.

Stronger ward spells? I actually found that dragons broke my wards less often then other mages do. Usually cus a dragon breath lasts like 5 seconds.
But yeah thats all i can think of is stronger ward spells. They seem to work fine for me against dragons.

It takes around a second to charge up your ward, and if you get hit before that happens, you'll get staggered.
