Elemental Protection is a blocking perk that in no way factors into what happens to your regular wards. I can offer the following advice. First, wards take time to reach full charge for max protection. Not long, only a few seconds, but you can't start casting with a fireball coming at your face and expect it to work if you catch my drift. That breaking glass sound you hear is what happens when magic hits the ward before its ready. back up so you're not directly infront of the blast furnace, and listen for that tell tale sudden inhale just before it rips off a breath attack. This will help you get the ward up intime.
Second, dispense with the ward entirely when the dragon lands. get closer and use a sheild to bash the dragon straight in the mouth. This will imediatly stop the breath attack.
Last. invest in stronger wards. as you level so do the dragons. Their breath attacks will get stronger. Get Steadfast and Grand Ward ASAP. some enchanted items to reduce the cost of your wards will help reduce the drain on your magicka.
