Why Pyandonea Would Be the Greatest Expansion Ever

Post » Wed Aug 29, 2012 3:17 pm

So, in case you haven't noticed, the next DLC, Hearthfire, was recently announced and will be out soon. While Bethesda is probably already working on their next big expansion for Skyrim, or at least have some idea as to what they want to do, perhaps a Pyandonea expansion could be the one to follow it (not that I'm insinuating that Bethesda will come across this thread, think my idea is genius, and develop it. One can hope, right?). That is, if the next expansion isn't Pyandonea. Which, if it is, I will jump through the roof upon announcement. But enough rambling.

What is Pyandonea?

If you're not a hard-core fan of the Elder Scrolls, you've probably never heard of Pyandonea. It's a continant to the south of Summerset Isle (map: http://tamrielchronicles.com/assets/maproadslore.jpg) covered in rain-forrest, and populated by a race of elves known as Maormer. Now, if this doesn't already sound like an awesome DLC setting, read on...

Here are some reasons why it would be great:

- An opportunity to expand upon a land and lore that we know very little about.

Most people want to reserve the other provinces of Tamriel for full-fledged games. We have yet to explore High Rock, Hammerfell, Elsweyr, Summerset Isle, Black Marsh and Valenwood except for in Arena (which had all of Tamriel), which many Elder Scrolls fans feel would require their own full-fledge game to do any of them justice. I haven't heard anyone say the same about Pyandonea.

The Elder Scrolls series has never taken us anywhere besides Tamriel, which is all well and good, but there's a whole planet out there full of other lands which could introduce loads of new and interesting lore. Bethesda could unleash all of their creative potential to flesh out this area. Within reason, of course.

- A break from the snowy slopes of Skyrim

Sure, I love the frozen tundras and snow capped mountains and pine forrests, but wouldn't it be nice to go somewhere tropical? From what I know, there has yet to be a jungle setting for us to explore in TES. And, stemming from the same idea behind the first bullet point, it adds diversity and could offer up some interesting level design (exploring the inner depths of a volcano, anyone?).

- Maormer

This race has never been seen before. They're elves with chameleon-ish skin and are able to blend into the enviornment. They also ride serpents and practice a unique form of magic. How cool is that? I'd love to be able to play as one...

- Snake-Magic

According to UESPWiki, these sea-elves practice a snake-like magic, thus providing an opportunity to create a brand new school of magic. What this magic is and does (aside from tame sea-serpants) is, again, entirely up to the imagination of the developers.

For those of you who are mages, post some ideas of new spells. I'm toying with the idea of water destruction spells, but I don't know how water would be very good for destroying things.

- Other goodies they could add (they could still add some of these without Pyandonea, but still...)

- Spears and javelins! For some reason, it seems appropriate that spears would be introduced in a jungle setting.
- Serpant mounts.
- Spell crafting (should have been in vanilla game, but whatever)
- Levatation spells.
- New (marriable) followers with personailites (Serena was a step in the right direction, Bethesda)
- There better also be an awesome main quest.
- New flora and fauna (weremonkey?)

It's a brilliant idea for a DLC. But what I find a little strange, is what the Dragonborn's business doing in Pyandonea? And the fact that it's all the way across Tamriel, I just don't see the Dragonborn being there. Skyrim really goes with the "Nordic" theme. I wouldn't really find it fitting for a DLC in Skyrim to take place in a tropical continent that lies all the way across Tamriel. Perhaps when the TES game's setting starts heading south near Elsweyr or Summerset Isles, then I can see Pyandonea being a DLC, or probably fit as its own game, with it being a continent and all.

Sounds like Obsidian-style Elder Scrolls spin off idea to me.

The next elder scrolls it's possible but as a Skyrim expansion the chances of that happening is extremely slim to none.

I have always been interested in the Sea Elves and Pyandonea. Not sure about it being in an expansion. I mean isn't it a whole continent?

I'd love to go there sometime, but I don't think an expansion would really do it justice.

It'd be cool for Bethesda to hand the reins over to a smaller studio like Obsidian to make a spin-off game like New Vegas. It was really cool seeing how Obsidian was able to improve on Fallout 3 and I'd like to see them handle some area in the Elder Scrolls world and add in some of the goodies from New Vegas like factions, reputation and the player actually having an impact on the game world.

Skyrim needs a break from the norm. thats what made shivering isles so special. you had cyrodil, and that was all fine and dandy, then you had the true expansion: shivering isles, which was a break from the norm. the only thing that was the same in it was the NPC races were all races you could choose from (aside from golden saint/seducer).
What was the Dragonborn's business in stamping out vampires/the sun? People need a break from the norm. all the nordic stuff is suffocating sometimes. seeing new architecture and a new land thats completely different is exactly what the big dlc should be.

No, it's often believed to be a chain of islands, but nobody really knows for sure.

That would also be pretty great. Maybe even better...

While I would love to finally see the Maormer and go somewhere tropical, I can't see it happening.

There would be a ton of new content. Certainly more than Shivering Isles, and that was possibly Bethesda's largest expansion ever. We could potentially see at least one new school of magic and I would imagine quite a few changes and additions as well. The continent would be completely new in terms of meshes and textures. They would have to develop the Maormer culture almost from scratch as we have virtually nothing on them. Then there's the matter of new armor, weapons, and other miscellaneous items as Pyandonea would have almost nothing from Tamriel. Add on that tons of new animations, voicework for an entire race likely with some important characters having their own unique voices and a huge list of other stuff... And how the heck does the Dragonborn even get over there, anyway?

I think Pyandonea would require way too much work for an expansion. It's more suited for an entirely new game, or a spinoff from another company.

I don't think an expansion would give it it's best view/it would give it justice. Maybe a full game? But still, great idea!

It definitely seems like a lot of gamejam stuff is pointing at a jungle setting.

Bethesda would more than likely to do something really catchy though. Not too sure if jungle is very contemporary and tasteful. But I would like to see that.

UESP claims that Pyandonea is an island, not a whole continent. Of course, that says nothing about its size.

What if this hypothetical DLC also included Thras (home of the sload)? This could set up a possible new faction war.

Look at how close Windhelm and Dragonwood are to Solstheim, where the dark elves have bene pushed back due to the Argonians. That also sounds fun to just walk over there.
