Save Game Method - Heavily Modded Game

Post » Sat Sep 15, 2012 9:36 pm

So, what's the prevailing wisdom for using Quicksave? I always disable autosave, but I do that as more of a hold-over standard from Oblivion rather than really knowing if it's faulty in Skyrim.

I run about 80 mods.... 15-20 or so being texture/ mesh replacers.

I know there was a hotkey Script Dragon mod for quicksaving to a savegame slot but I don't use Script Dragon anymore.

Are there any links on the topic or someone in the modding community that can talk a bit here about the details of quicksaving vs. autosaving vs. conventional saves?

I know about the lingering save dilemna and already treat my savegames with care.

Last question, if the right thing is to only use fresh save game slots is there a limit on how many you can create before it becoming problematic?

Thanks.

Quicksave is in the same boat as Autosave. Don't use it.

The best practice is to use the same mods throughout a save game's life, but in absence of that, I would say do a new save every level or so... (I don't think numbers of save games will be an issue, but you could always move them to a different folder if it did start to cause problems. It would make for a cleaner directory anyways...)

Personally, I tend to limit the number of saves I make for ease of finding the ones I do have...

Edit: Wait, what's the problem with quicksave?

Constantly saves over itself. Same problem Autosaves have, the game's logic for overwriting saves is more vulnerable to corruption than just creating a fresh save file.

Never had any trouble with quicksaves, autosaves, or any saves for that matter. Other than those that Papyrus contaminates anyway, but that can happen with any of them if you get hold of a bad mod.

Constantly saving over itself isn't an issue, because if it was, that would be indicative of a problem with the operating system's file handlers. Crashing or having some other problem while making any save is what leads to problems.
