How to slow your speech?

Post » Thu Oct 04, 2012 7:58 pm

I have a speech impediment, i talk way too fast, my brain works to fast, its really embarrassing/frustrating, because people usually have to say what? 20 different times.
Do you guys know any way to slow my speech?

Not a clue, sorry. My issues in that area have more to do with my stupid man-voice.

You may want to look into a speech therapist if you're serious about correcting this impediment, though.

Make an effort to breathe deeply and slowly.

Don't drink coffee and/or similar things before the speech. That could help. :)

Its going to be hard to do it alone. My suggestion to you is to get the people you interact with on a daily basis involved. If they catch you talking to fast, or not even catch you but can't understand what you're saying, tell them to let you know. Everytime you talk to fast, have a piece of gum with a flavor you don't like and slow down in your speech.

Most people hate graqe. Try that. If you really hate that flavor, you'll slow down over time.

Let me know if it works. I feel like its a bastardized form of operant conditioning.

speech therapist

I had a horrible lisp when I was younger. I went through speech therapy to overcome it.

It may be embarrassing at first, but it's worth it. Trust me :)

Overcoming a speech impediment takes time and disclpine and it needs to be caught and corrected early.

I had trouble with words that had R's and L's.

I used to get mad because i would have to see a speech therapist for a full period of every school day and all they did was correct me.

As an example:Larry became Wawwy. It's not an easy proccess as you have to repeat a letter over and over and over..Then use it correctly.

Sometimes you feel stupid because you can't pronounce a letter right and you want to blame the person helping you because you feel they are being mean.

I hated speech therapy but in the end it helped me.Even with it i'll still get a weird pronunciation every once in a while if i get mad or excited.Thats to be expected.

I had speech therapy for a few months when I was 9, and then again for a few months when I was 13 (different issue). And I think they both helped me a lot, they made me aware of what exactly was wrong and what I was supposed to do to improve.
