Why all tthe criticism and new IP

Post » Tue Oct 16, 2012 3:05 pm

Maybe it's just one of those games meant to be played on PC. There are fewer and fewer of those, so I for one appreciate the care taken in the UI and that there's a noticeable difference in high resolution. Not that graphics will ever matter much to me- art design wins over graphics in my book, and Dishonored has that in spades.
But it's not. Its crystal clear the only significant difference between the PC and console versions is the graphics. Of course this is no surprise as pretty much every game looks better on PC.

Regarding new IPs - there's always going to be some extra effort needed for a new IP to make the same impression as an established franchise. However, it seems like there's a tangible shift in gaming media within the last few years, where everyone in it realizes that the industry is running on sequels, series, and re-vamps of older franchises, and many reviewers seem much more excited about a new IP and more willing to cut them some slack. In the (glowing) reviews I read for Dishonored, quite a few of them responded positively to the fact that it's a new, original game rather than the latest installment in the "Final Mass Call of Battlefield Fantasy Effect Duty VII: Zombie Edition."

True and that's because people like what is familiar to them. Sequels of something will always be made but I can barely call them "improvements". Some of them do improve but in such a minor way that the core gameplay stays the same and it just feels stagnant.

I personally think a sequel for Dishonored, set in another place of the world Arkane created would be a great idea, if they improve on what they have.

I found myself surprised at how different the game can look just using the right cables for console. I started playing on PS3 with component cables and found myself thinking I could sort of understand why people were on the game for blurry effects and whatever. Save corrupted. I needed to redownload. Switched over to 360, plugged in via HDMI. Difference was night and day. The lighting effects seemed to improve, objects looked more defined, colors sharper. So I'm wondering if it's a matter of the TV used and cables as well because the whole comparing Dishonored to [insert game over 5 years old], without qualification, doesn't make sense anymore for me. I'd probably be agog over PC.

But to the topic instead of sub-topic, fans parse out of a Platonic ideal. Others brown-town because the bile ducts need emptying.

Sad to see all these visual issues with the consoles. Old console generation is old is all I can say. For the first time in a long while I am glad with my PC purchase.

Anyway, on topic, the game has a lot of areas for criticism. It doesn't do anything wrong per se but it doesn't go anywhere with what it has either. Everything in the game can be improved, absolutely everything, and that is not a good thought to have lingering over while you play it.

However, besides idiotic systems like Metacritic and so on, I'd say some reviewers don't know what they are talking about when they were playing Dishonored. I've seen rants in reviews about graphical fidelity that can't be attached to Dishonored at all. I've seen attacks against the game's (I kid you not) "unrealistic difficulty" where you die to two gunshots. But of course not all who criticize it are that off track. There are people who've criticized its lack of depth and awkward pacing + game length issues in large detail and they were right.

The game is not perfect but it is really enjoyable and it is a quality title. It has shown us that Arkane know what they are doing and need to continue doing it. That way they will learn from past projects and hopefully improve upon future ones. So my advise would be, play the game and enjoy it, don't let others cloud your opinion.

Now I understand. I've just grown so used to the presence of my HDMI cables connecting my PS3 to my HD 56" Sharp Aquos LCD that I didn't think of this as a factor, and have been reading all this stuff everywhere about how atrocious the console versions look compared to PC and was nonplussed. My version looks great - I feel sorry for people who don't use that kind of cabling; it was a must for me and I've never tried playing console games on standard non-HDMI cables; I can imagine I wouldn't be pleased.

Sure, the game would almost definitely look better on my PC, and as I have a pretty nice setup on mine (used to game exclusively on my PC until a few years ago), when it drops in price I might even pick up an additional copy for my PC so I can see for myself. Until then, I'll keep enjoying my HDMI cables while playing and count myself lucky - the game is very beautiful.
