Why all tthe criticism and new IP

Post » Tue Oct 16, 2012 1:39 am

I have been reading reviews of players around the web and reading comments, tough most reviewers agree on the quality of the game, many players seem to somewhat dislike the game. What is there to dislike about dishonored? the game doesn't seem to have real flaws? Also, do you guys think that because the game is a new IP it will be less popular for it?

It is difficult to get a new IP off the ground if you want to give yourself the breadth to expand it and depth to keep it interesting. However from what I've seen most people raising this issue were willing to look past it because they enjoyed playing the game. But I'll admit I haven't been keeping close tabs on the reviews yet.

Most of the people who dislike it are probably run'n'gun gamers who just rushed trough the game shooting everything that moves. For me, this might very well be my favourite game of all time.

ahah yeah, i have heard some peoples were able to finish the game in about 6 hours. Its strange, i don't understant why someone would pay 60 bucks for a game and try to finish it as fast as possible.

Dishonored is a combination of a lot of different kinds of games. Some people expect it to be X or Y, and it's not, so they're disappointed. Some people wanted it to have more complicated mechanics (I am one of these people; I love the game, but I think it could have done a bit more in this regard), so they're disappointed. Other people are just nitpicking because that's what they like to do. Other people are angry at Bethesda for Skyrim and its problems, and they're taking it out on Dishonored. Other people like to go against consensus, so they dislike Dishonored automatically. There are so many reasons to dislike any game ...

Also, do you guys think that because the game is a new IP it will be less popular for it?

Original IPs are rarely wildly successful. This seems to have done very well, though, so here's to hoping for DLC (never thought I'd type those words!) and a sequel!

You get a certain amount of flak just for showing up. No game can meet every person's expectations. That said, most of the reviews I've seen have been positive to utterly glowing, with a few "meh, I was disappointed" reactions which often prove to be false expectations based on misinformation.

Well, there's Assassin's Creed, Half-Life, Bioshock, God of War ... uhm ... ???

Out of these, the newest is AC, right?

Oh, Minecraft!

There you go. Much more concise a reply than mine.

The game has its flaws. Notably the ugly graphics on consoles. Theres also a few bugs and the voice acting is inconsistant. So its not a 10/10. Reviewers and gamers aren't exactly free thinkers nowadays. One hater with alot of popularity can influence an entire army of hate boys. Its sort of upsetting because a lot of popular returning titles get free passes without earning it while new and refreshing games get thrown in the gutter for no good reason. Just look at a Duke Nukem Forever. People reviewed and bashed the game before even playing it and it turned out to be one of the most hated good games of all time.

I have to wonder, what would have happened if LGS was still around, xbox would have never been made and PC being the main platform to develope games. For the past ~10 years games have "evolved" to more casual, streamlined, simplified pile of grey goo and today younger people who have never even heard about Thief or the orginal Deus Ex or System Shock prefer to play any game that is made from that grey goo. If some game tries to make things differently, it's too "hardcoe" for them.

This parody is a great example about the dirrection games are going:

Are the graphics really that bad on console? A shame, if so. The game is so atmospheric and beautiful. I love the ducts and pipes, the blind alleys, and the ratty back rooms with hissing stoves. Feels like real old cities I've been in, especially in Eastern Europe.

Bulletstorm, another original game that has failed to reach the audiences. Sad. The game wasn't that great, but i would have played it any time over Modern warfare 3 (not that the game is horrible, it is playable and all, but it extremely it lacks originality)

Yea they are pretty ugly. Its like playing Halflife 2 with low textures and no Aliasing. Everything just seems blurry and jaggedy. I can still appreciate the creativity of it all but it is sort of a let down visually.

Woah there! Dishonored looks much better than Half life 2. Textures arent that great when you get close, but the game does look good, its more artistic than realistic.

We've had some good ones in the past year or so. Some successful both critically and financially others only critically.
  • Dead Island
  • The Walking Dead
  • Dragon's Dogma
  • Kingdom's of Amalur
  • The Last Story
  • L.A. Noire
I admit Dead Island and Dragon's Dogma seem like the only two that are going to spawn a big series but all of them where noteworthy new IPs.

I really don't see your point oof. You can make anything look awesome when you scale it down to a tiny window. Even on my 32 inch HD this game looks considerably worse than the PC version. I speak the truth and don't pull punches regardless if I like the game or not. Fanboyism ruins gaming.

I stand by my opinion.

That's why you're supposed to open those tiny windows in new tabs ... and why they offer close-ups of textures ...

While there's a little hyberbole in the Half-Life comparison, I see what he's getting at - you walk up close to an audiograph machine on the X360 version and it's a very low-res texture. It doesn't bother me overmuch as I wasn't looking to Dishonored for bleeding-edge graphics, but it's definitely not looking as sharp as it could. Hopefully we'll see some improvement in Dishonored 2.

Regarding new IPs - there's always going to be some extra effort needed for a new IP to make the same impression as an established franchise. However, it seems like there's a tangible shift in gaming media within the last few years, where everyone in it realizes that the industry is running on sequels, series, and re-vamps of older franchises, and many reviewers seem much more excited about a new IP and more willing to cut them some slack. In the (glowing) reviews I read for Dishonored, quite a few of them responded positively to the fact that it's a new, original game rather than the latest installment in the "Final Mass Call of Battlefield Fantasy Effect Duty VII: Zombie Edition."

Maybe it's just one of those games meant to be played on PC. There are fewer and fewer of those, so I for one appreciate the care taken in the UI and that there's a noticeable difference in high resolution. Not that graphics will ever matter much to me- art design wins over graphics in my book, and Dishonored has that in spades.
