Sure, it's awkward, but Bethesda has no experience with horse combat and it wasn't their priority, so I'm not surprised. I didn't buy Skyrim for horses, so it doesn't bother me - if I want decent horse combat, I play Mount&Blade.
I haven't had any problems with hit detection. Just the opposite, actually. If I'm even anywhere close to something I'm trying to hit in melee - if It's on the side I'm swinging at.. It's getting hit.
The horse absorbing some of the damage you take is what gets me. I have stopped using it entirely because without fail - every single time - my horse'll die in one or two swings or arrows.
I use shadowmere and that horse does not seem to die. If he does just re-spawns at the stable.
its a shame you cant do ride your horseee FPS that way you wont miss every time you fire your bow
I might use the horse more often then. The problem is I can run faster and longer than my horse. Even though the combat is a bit clunky it's nice that they added this feature.
Very awkward. I can't stand the horses in Skyrim anyway, so it didn't really make a difference. I wish Skyrim had horseback gameplay like Red Dead Redemption (minus the guns of course).

here is a suggestion get a horse that can't die *Shadowmere * from the dark brotherhood quest and get a loyal dog called Barbas from The Daedra Best Friend Quest both animals can't be killed*just start these quest until you are given both animals and never end the quest so you can keep them they both have made me win the game and i never leave home without them they are my family on this journey and the dog is so funny he is like a real big dog annoying in your face every minute knocks over everything in all my houses but i love him and my black horsey with her red eyes haha

WOOPS FORGOT TO MENTION MY HUBBY TOO Farkas i bring him to on my quest but not all the time i rather be with my animals haha leave the old ball and chain home to make money selling oh this and that
it seems to me that with melee combat you can only hit enemys to your side and no farther than 5 feet away. adn arrow shots arc down faster than normal.
I take it you like to have an entourage when you travel.
That must make horse riding a bit tedious having to go slow all the time. I personally never bother with "followers" simply because they get in the way to much and only slow me down.
People REALLY????? I have Shadowmere as my horse and well she is great and doesn't die from attacks and i combat off her all the time I love it!!! I am a real horse rider/ trainer so i appreciate this in my game i never leave my horse unless i have too all i can say to you all having problems is: Practice makes perfect, and get a horse like Shadowmere that can't die easily... Cowboy/Cowgirl UP!!!!! ps having my dog Barbas too by my side the enemy has NO CHANCE!!! haha Get him Barbas!!!
