What they should've had in Heartfire.

Post » Fri Nov 16, 2012 3:28 pm

No one is saying that they shouldn't include more content because they're not making money from the DLC. We're saying that they're charging a fair price for the content that's there. You're asking for a ridiculous level of content for something that costs you $5.

And that said, Hearthfire adds a whole new level of RP-gameplay for $5. When did people start getting so entitled that they think they're supposed to get a whole new game for free?
ha im asking for a "ridiculous amount of content" because i think the houses should be more varied and unique? i think its ridiculous that they make millions of dollars from us, their loyal fans, for something that lacks real substance and didn't take much to create except for alot of copy and paste. You know it probably only took a few people at beth a day or so to create hearthfire, they could've at least done something unique to each house beside a beehive here and grain grinder there...really? At least give us different skins for the houses so they at least feel different..even the most modest modder can easily do that in no time

Yeah, I don't think you quite get how sophisticated this content actually is. There's only one existing mod for "build-your-own-house", and it doesn't demonstrate anywhere near the depth that you find in Hearthfire. So no, it didn't take them a couple of days, and no, even a very experienced modder wouldn't be able to do it in "no time". Your comment demonstrates that you really don't understand all the factors that have to be taken into consideration for just the house-building part of this DLC to actually work properly.

And by your logic, content should be based on how much money the company will make from the overall product rather than based on how much content the individual player gets for their money. Not only is that unpredictable, but it makes zero sense. You paid $5 for your DLC. You got at least $5 worth of content (I'd say more, based on the level of depth it adds to the game as a whole). It doesn't matter that thousands of other people also spent $5. They each got $5 worth of content.

After all, Skyrim only cost $60, but they made millions off of sales. Shouldn't they be forced to make a game that reflects the millions of dollars they hadn't earned from its sales?

They should have added new, original houses. They basically added 3 partially customizable houses which are in the middle of nowhere and basically similar to Proudspire Manor. I would've liked some sort of Castle, like Castle Volkihar, where we can hire Guards and customize rooms and have our own 'court'. I don't know, Hearthfire is good for $5, but I would happily pay another $10 for my own castle or town.

I agree here based upon what I have seen from you-tubes, kind of looks cookie cutter... Over all, to me it seems like a cool idea. I do like the number of armor manikins, display racks etc. (got kind of a e-item hoarding problem lol) I will have to get a more firm opinion though once I play it for myself. I hope this isn't the only thing they are planning on doing with the hearthfire addition.

I was really hoping when I first saw the trailer that you could pick more of a variety of areas, with more options as to how to make your house look. I personally was hoping to build one in the mountains near Markarth, with a simular type build structure (kind of like a castle). Or better yet somewhere on the Throat of the world mountain, same Markarth Style/Castle style, The "view" from there is amazing.

From the videos, it also looks like the houses could use some lighting effects too, but again, I will have to actually see it in game on my pc before I can make a sound opinion on that aspect of it.

ha you took the words from my fingers

seriously though it is only $5 from our pocket but millions of dollars put into theirs. I wish i knew the number of downloads so far but i can bet its well over a million so far and they still haven't even touched the PC or Ps3 pockets yet...

for millions of dollars they should give us more meat on the bone then simply "house armor" with not much difference between builds except for the "should i add this or leave it out" type of differences that we as players have to make to keep the 3 houses from being exactly the same.

I love skyrim and love anything new added as im xbox and cant add my own things but they could put more effort into these add-ons then simply copying and pasting ideas (gamejam) and models (load screen trophies)

I could totally see your point, aswell as other peoples about getting what you pay for.. Hopefully that mass amount of money they make from it will fund a more meatier future addition, and this one was just kind of a test the waters type addition to see how people would take it before they invested more time into it, Know what I mean?

Hearthfire is $5. 5. Dollars.

Also, the notion of "build your own castle" is a little ludicrous. Building a house is enough work on its own. Building a castle or hollowing out a cave would take a whole team of workers, etc. etc. And just because your idea of the Dragonborn makes the character into some kind of malevolent, brooding ruler who needs a giant castle to feel important doesn't mean that everyone else plays the character that way.

Sorry for the multi edits lol, but seriously had to comment on this one.... I mean COME ON you are the Dragonborn, You saved all of freakn Skyrim, you deserve a castle. I mean seriously.... with the way it stands, at level 60 you could over throw the whole dang place if the game mechanics let you, or even buy the whole place... For example... My Daedric helm is worth over 10k gold.... Armor .. even more.. and that is just 2 items... One of my characters House carls are equiped with such shiney items that what they run around wearing is probably worth more then some of the small towns.. (last calculation from 7 months ago, and she [Jordis] is just wearing some older gear before i got my Enchanting/Alchemy/Smithing up, is valued at over 50k gold)

Maybe you play your character as a humble guy/gal that just wants a cozzy lil cottage somewhere to grow old in, that's great... the same could be said about your very comment in the end. "Doesn't mean that everyone else plays the character that way" My only point is more options are better then less.. yes it's only 5 bucks.. but imo its a cool start... doesnt hurt to toss out idea sparkers that hopefully some developers will read and make it "reality".

Being able to adopt children was a nice start...I would have liked to train my child from my own pool. You can give them a sword to wail on dummies with, why not teach them apprentice spells? Or archery? Of thievery if you're the sort?

Or how about giving your spouse a shop like she's always talking about that generates revenue in a cash box? Or even establishing what kind of shop? Would be nice to have somewhere prominent to sell all those weapons we grind on your way through Blacksmithing besides regular vendors. Or our potions we make and all the surplus ingredients we wind up with.
This fits nicely into someone's previous idea on this board for having a brewery. Sounds legit to me. Not sure abut anyone else.

The groundwork has been laid, in Vanilla and in Hearthfire, even Dawnguard. They could do a lot more in the future to make us go "I want to go home" after a dungeon delve."

true theres only 1 mod for a build your own home and its not on this scale but thats because presumably 1 person created that mod and they dont have access to the same technology and software that beth does. teams at beth created alot of "mods" in 1 week for gamejam, you honestly believe this house add on took longer then a week? except for the house exterior everything already existed in the game and therefore in their programs so they only had to be pieced together and loaded up in order as the player "builds" their house...lather, rinse, repeat that 3 times for 3 houses.

also had you read my post properly you would see that what i said was easy to do was to change the skin (color/texture not the shape) for each house to at least give the image of a different house even though it would be the same layout. it would be nice to choose between textures for each house to make 1 wood, 1 stone, and 1 clay or something else.

TES are my fav games but beth is slipping in the new substance department..dawnguard had a decent amount of substance but for $20 i expected more then identical main quests for both factions.

they should have had different architectural styles that fit the climate nordic/whiterun architecture is all well and good but some variety is badly needed would have loved to make an orcish longhouse with a few extensions.

The bolded text goes both ways, though. If the option exists but it's not what you see your character doing, then you don't have to. Some of my characters won't be making use of the Hearthfire homes, because it makes no roleplay sense for them to do so, for example.

Hearthfire was definalty worth the $5 beth charged for it. Yes they could have added a bit more features into it to make each house more unique to every player, but it was good enough. Overall I enjoyed this add-on more than Dawnguard because seeing the house get built up step by step was thrilling, and got me back into playing Skyrim again.

They should have had several different styles to choose when you built your houses. You can have three but they are essentially all the same except a few different rooms but even those are the same with different furnishings.

This is even more odd considering the several different styles of buildings in the game and that is odd. The houses are great and offer a lot of storage but they should look different and they should be different. Heck Morrowind had three mansions you could choose one of and they all liked drastically different.

And just because YOUR idea of the Dragonborn makes him a person contented to live in a quiet cabin in the woods doesn't mean that everyone else plays that way either.

That's why I personally wanted a variety of home styles and plots of land to choose from. I wanted my necromancer character to live in a cave or a stone tower in the tundra. I wanted my barbarian character to live in a longhouse, and my hunter to live in the woods near a stream.

Not everyone plays the Dragonborn each time. There are an infinite number of characters you could want to play as, and all of them would want to have different houses, not the cookie cutter homes that we ended up getting.

Yeah, it's only 5 bucks, but I'd pay more money for something that allowed true creativity in regards to player homes, as well as children of all races to adopt, and a marriage system that was more than free money in a game that already throws gold at you like it's linked to plague.

That's just me though.

thats me too ;)

it really takes away from the open world, open player type when they hinder individual creativity choices in things like this. i understand we cant have it all for $5 but at least let us put our furnishings where we choose in our homes (within the grid) or choose the texture/color of our homes.
even the existing set object system couldve been more varied. they let us buy a basemant yet we cant turn it into a wine cellar, small dungeon, or anything individual.

what i was really hoping for in hearthfire was the ability to make my home feel unique to me since they messed up the grab and place object feature from previous games. In previous games i was able to decorate my homes and personalize them without losing my mind trying to get a skull to face forward on a shelf only to return later and see it on the floor...i'd pay $5 to see the old object placing system restored and would get way more enjoyment personally decorating the old way then buying objects and watch them fill the room in places i dont want them to

They should've allowed you to make a small town like Riverwood or Rorikstead. I think it would've been neat to have to get a population going and building the whole thing from scratch. Then it would be up to you to hire guards (Like mercenaries or hired swords) to keep it safe, or pay a Jarl for protection every few months (Since you cant always been in your town). You could be the "Founder" or "Mayor" like figure!
Rebuilding Helgen would be nice.

I'd have liked the simple option to remove certain items after they've been constructed. I never would have built that workbench in my armory had I known that my Bard would take to hammering on the damned thing in the middle of the night.

I understand both sides. On the one hand, Hearthfire is indeed five clams. And its purpose was not to add new adventures (like Dawnguard) or new land (like some Fallout DLC did). It was to add more options. You can now build a home, customize it to some extent, and adopt children. You can't do that in vanilla Skyrim. For $5, you can have a deeper, more immersive, more satisfying experience. It is more than worth it.

Yes, there are some things that would have been welcome. Some are things that should have been in the vanilla game: children of other races, for example. Others are minor things: I don't think a few choices of skin (Nord, Elvish, Orc) for the house would be that hard. And while I welcome the new adoptees, I don't get why Aventus can't be adopted or even return to Honorhall.

Every Hearthfire player will have their own opinion. However, I think it's a fine value for the money, and intend to own it as soon as I can.

I am quite happy with Hearthfire for my $5.

I think there are a lot of really good ideas and points in this thread, and if Bethesda is smart, they've got people reading it and taking note for the future. I know I for one would definitely shell out more bucks for some of the ideas posted here!

To add my 2 cents to the list, but for the whole of Skyrim the game (I know, probably another thread), would love to see some stock replies added as conversation options.....for example, every time the mage at Dragonsreach tells me "You know, if you have the aptitude, you should go to the mage's college at Winterhold..." I hardly go there anymore, makes me grit my teeth and want to chop out his tongue and tell him " Idiot!! I've been the bloody Archmage for ages!!!" OR, the snobby "gentleman farmer" in Whiterun who constantly asks " Do you get to the Cloud District often? Oh of course you don't" When a character does and has what most of ours has... just sayin'. I would like to stuff him up the Jarl's backside for real.....or at least say something to him to take him down a notch...

To the bold Paragraph, I totally agree lol fresh dialog is always nice. Such a small thing but it makes a huge difference.
Additional new voice actors would be nice too.. Not that i have anything against the current ones.. it's just alittle weird how alot of the people sound the same, especially noticed this in Dawnguard. Again, small thing, but makes a big difference.

Well, I'd like to say, I was very satisfied with Hearthfire, and I think it is well worth the $5.

The only problem I really have with it is that Bethesda didn't take the oppertunity to add more spouse options. They added Rayya, the housecarl for Falkreath, which is great because the only other Redguard available for marriage is the priestess of Dibella who can't leave the temple, but what that really proves to me is that they could have easily added more potential spouses (namely Bosmer and Khajiit and even Altmer, cause that one High Elf you can marry is... not a nice woman) but didn't. Of all the DLCs they could have possibly made, Hearthfire would have been the perfect one to do this with, considering its supposed to be about homes and family.

When you guys get your $5 footlong at Subway, do you also ask for a side of foie-gras?

No, but since I'm a regular at my local Subway I get free cookies.
