ITT: Why faction locking? What does players stand to gain fr

Local forum poster Numpty brought up a point in another thread which got me thinking:

I didn't call It a clone ? I simply meant some people will blindly agree with developers hoping they will make the right choice, no matter what they see and thats how game companies (mostly mmos) don't try to change because they still make money either way. And faction locking brings nothing to the table

What does faction locking bring to the table? On the player side, we've debated this fiercely bringing up many good points to support both sides of the argument. However, we have yet to look at this from Zenimax's angle. Just what does Zenimax gain from faction locking? Well, there are many things actually. Lets look at some of them.

For starters, it forces player to spend more time leveling up different characters, instead of just being able to focus on one. This makes the game artficly longer then it really is, because players will have to work more, just to experience content.

Another area Zenimax stands to gain in is the possibility of a cosmetic cash shop. Instead of making one ugly default looking character look more unique, you will have to spend the money to make 3 or more characters not look generic. This idea strongly suggests that there may be a cosmetic cash shop for the game. As I have seen this tactic used on other MMOs before.

So, there you have it, my conclusion is that faction locking is nothing more then a money grab, that doesn't really add anything to the actual game.

My conclusion is that you could have added this to one of the many other "Zomg not faction locking. I hate this game/company" threads that there are and not started another one.

I don't see why there is so much hate over faction locking. You aren't going to be able to explore every inch of the world on one character, it's not the end of the world (earth or Tamriel, take your pick).

Can we please stop poking this bland and long dead topic with sticks here? If you want to discuss this just go join in on one of the like 10 on-going threads. This topic DOES NOT warrant another bloody thread -.-

I'm sorry, did anyone else see a thread about what Zenimax stands to gain from faction locks? Because, all I've seen are different topics about how it effects players.

If there was actually a valid argument here to be had about how ZeniMax can use faction locking to gain more money, then I'd say fine leave this thing open. But as it stands your reasons are pretty baseless so this thread really only serves as another one on which the recycled back and forth discussion can go on.
