Can I install Skyrim to my X Box without problems now?

Post » Sun Feb 03, 2013 10:56 pm

After playing Skyrim on my PS 3 over the last year I finally caved-in and bought it for my X Box so I could experience all of the downloadable content Bethesda has created for it. I bought Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn this afternoon. The game seems to be running smoothly off of the disk. I've seen several older posts all over the internet regarding texture glitches on the X Box if the game is installed. Has this problem been fixed adequately, or should I continue to just play the game off of the disk without installing it?

I tried to install it when Dawnguard was out and the game ran like molasses while installed so I just uninstalled it and keep going from the disk. This is on a Slim 360 w/320 GB HDD.

This problem was fixed in patch 1.3, many months ago, so you shouldn't have any problems installing it to your HDD. In fact, it is advisable to do that, because if you run it from disk, Skyrim keeps the DVD spinning because it constantly has to loads chunks of the game in (it uses a dynamic load system). This constant spinning of the DVD drive will generate a little extra heat, and, depending upon the ventilation around your Xbox, can cause your console to get hot during long periods of play (i.e. hot electronics increases electrical resistance, which creates more heat, creating a positive feedback loop that can overheat your console). Installing Skyrim to your HDD will allow the DVD drive to turn itself off after about 30 seconds of play, thus preventing any excess heat building up. Also, the seek time of the HDD is much faster, so the game will load quicker.

I have the old Xbox 360 arcade model and I havent encountered a crash after playing for 7 hours straight out of 15 hours playing Dragonborn. I have minor glitches with disappearing walls but that is fixed by going out of the cell then back in.

The texture issues were fixed a long time ago. I dont think there is need to worry. The overall loadtimes when exiting a building into solstheim is really fast.

Just one thing to note if you are starting a new character to play Dragonborn DLC. From what I have been reading on these forums, the "Dragonborn" DLC can be quite tough (which is good because it provides a good challenge for more developed characters). However, if you are starting a new character, then you may find things hard going when you go to Solstheim. Apparently, it is advisable for your character to be about at least level 20 before attempting it (assuming you are not playing on 'Novice' difficulty).

That matches my experience also. I played through it for about 14 hours before DB became unstable and I had to uninstall DG and wipe my system. (a topic for another list) I'm trying DB with a clean install (fingers crossed)

Level 20 to 30-ish should be OK depending on difficulty setting. There were some pretty high level bad guys. I went in at level 50+ and was frequently assaulted by groups of 6 or more Drauger Death Lords. The new Serpentine Dragons are also tougher than what you're probably used to.

Spoiler
Werebears go down pretty easy if you can hit them before they turn.

Spoiler
so far, I found at least one very tough Dragon Preist with another Dragon Preist Mask (can't remember what it does, sorry)

I decided to wait until after completing chapter 1 of the main quest before going to Solstheim. I've been playing on Adept difficulty. The cultists I've encountered from the Dragonborn expansion haven't been much of an issue, but the master vampires from the Dawnguard expansion are a different story. They've been pretty difficult to deal with at lower levels.
