Tips for a Spellsword on Master

Post » Mon Feb 04, 2013 9:22 pm

I haven't played the game much on master. My one success so far is a bound bow archer, when is mostly due to distance from enemies and followers tanking.

I wanted to start a spellsword though and try it from start on master too.

Heavy armor, one handed, dest.

Any tips?

Oops I meant to put this in the main skyrim tip an hints board.

Would you be interested in this build?

I'm currently at level 33. This build is much fun. Currently playing on Adept, waiting to get a few things first before I play on Master.

I optimized my character to be able to use shouts as often as possible. Currently, he's able to make another shout before "Become Ethereal" even wears off. Extremely useful for spell casting and other times when I need more defense.

This is my personal http://skyrimcalculator.com/249768 build and it has been very effective on Master.

The spells I use regularly are

Alteration (Ebony Flesh, Paralyze)
Restoration (Grand Healing, Greater Ward)
Destruction (Fire/Frost/Lightning Cloak, Fireball, Ice Storm, Chain Lightning)

I'm at 61 and my Stats are 400 Health, 300 Magicka, 200 Stamina.

Spellsword is my personal favourite char type so here ar my personal tips :

1. Go for one handed ( swords are my preference but it doest really make that much diffrence)
2. Destruction magic is good until the enemy closes in, so I would cast a cloak spell and and then chuck lighting bolts or firballs at them.
3. SPECIALIAZE your one handed, destruction and conjuration ( them apart from restoration should IMO be your magic skills). Spellswords on master ( not sure how much more if so than other char types ) require careful perk managment. Pick a type of one handed weapon ( axe sword or mace) and invest perks into THAT one, same goes for destrctuion, pick either fire frost or shock and stick to that. Conjuration invest perks into either summoning undead or my suggestion of Daedric summoing so you can effectively cast Dremora Lords.
4. Make sure to have a powerful Ward and healing spell.
5. Enchanting should be your friend. Without talking about 'abusing' the system to make outrageously powerful enchantmetns ensure that you have each school of magic down to around at least 45% of its orignal cost, as well as making sure that you have the 80% or so reduction cap from elemental damage. DO NOT HAVE MAGIC ABSORB IF YOU INTEND TO USE CONJURATION.

The build I posted above uses no Enchanting, and takes full benefit of the Atronach Stone.

Which is not preerable for a spellsword due to spellswords ( the type I listed) use of summons.

Spellswords don`t use heavy armor (at least not the really heavy stuff), they prefer light. They don`t make use of smithing or conjuration. Alteration is a must, too, so is Block.

See: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Classes

Everything else is a class "with similarities to Spellswords", but not an actual spellsword.

You're going off of a table from Morrowind. By your reasoning, it would be impossible to become some of these classes due to missing skills and such. Going off of actual descriptions would be much more useful.

If going by the actual descriptions, what I actually do (read my post about Night Blades in Dragonborn General Forums), Spellswords are described as versatile supporting and skirmishing units.
You don`t skirmish well in heavy armor, do you?
And btw, the combination of heavy armor, Destruction, melee weapon screams "Battlemage" all over the head...

And if TES-Lore offers pre-defined classes that don`t use Skill A, B or C (like Smithing or Enchanting), you can not suddenly come up with that particular build and call yourself "spellsword", no.
You can argue how missing Skills like "Long Blade" or "Medium Armor" are to be treated in Skyrim, ofcourse, but this is a seperate question.

Back to the topic at hand, Spellsword (or actually, Battlemage),tips:

Use Fire magic, especially in combination with Fire Cloak and the Armor reducing fire perks, but don`use it as primary damage source. Your primary damage source is melee combat.
Use Alteration for magic armors and paralysis (your best and only CC option!) if things get ugly.
Make use of conjuration, especially atronachs, for support and distraction (meat shields).

To me spellswords are all about verastility. Profeciant at many master of none ( except for me Im a boss at everything  ).

Also here is oblivions version. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Classes#Spellsword

Spellsword in Morrowind, oblvion , skyrim do not amount to the same thing.

I totally agree with you: Spellswords are versatile, and this fact is more important than "(not) wearing heavy armor" or using "smithing" or not.
That`s why Necrovamp rightfully suggested to going off of the actual descriptions of the classes. I guess we can, for example, argue wether they should prefer heavy or light armor, but Spellswords should stay away from, pf, Sneaking or security (especially since, lore-wise, Alteration offers open locks spells and stealthy magic classes already exist, like Nightblades).

Agreed, whilst I do have perks in lockpicking in order to not break 9000 everytime, it would be in actual fact me opening it with magic. As for stealthy magic, I would say a spellsword could make some use of it. To me a spellsword used magic to bolster his abilities, be it damage output, health or ability to sneak.
