If going by the actual descriptions, what I actually do (read my post about Night Blades in Dragonborn General Forums), Spellswords are described as versatile supporting and skirmishing units.
You don`t skirmish well in heavy armor, do you?
And btw, the combination of heavy armor, Destruction, melee weapon screams "Battlemage" all over the head...
And if TES-Lore offers pre-defined classes that don`t use Skill A, B or C (like Smithing or Enchanting), you can not suddenly come up with that particular build and call yourself "spellsword", no.
You can argue how missing Skills like "Long Blade" or "Medium Armor" are to be treated in Skyrim, ofcourse, but this is a seperate question.
Back to the topic at hand, Spellsword (or actually, Battlemage),tips:
Use Fire magic, especially in combination with Fire Cloak and the Armor reducing fire perks, but don`use it as primary damage source. Your primary damage source is melee combat.
Use Alteration for magic armors and paralysis (your best and only CC option!) if things get ugly.
Make use of conjuration, especially atronachs, for support and distraction (meat shields).
