5 (6) Skills per QuickBar - is it REALLY enough?

Post » Thu Mar 21, 2013 8:37 pm

So we've been told:

5 normal abilities
1 extra 'special' ability

Change weapons you get another bar of skills....

Is that really enough for skilled RvR?

Sounds like Diablo III - I didn't really like it...

I know its against the game style but having a bar of all your stuff and binding all my keys QWERTFGZXCV and 123456 makes me feel like im more fully immersed and skilled.

What do you think?

I have thought about it a lot and have come to different conclusions each time - I think we can say it is safe to assume that for a DPS role or a bruiser/tank, 6 slots will be enough, 1 generic spam ability, 2 finishers, 1 utility, 1 temp buff and then your potion slot; this would work and when you think about it you only really use 4-7 skills in any other MMO unless it very particular circumstances. I do see some problems for healers arising though, 1 generic spam ability, 1 instant/dispel, 1 short cast, 1 long cast, 1 utility, 1 tem.... wait we have run out of slots, I really don't see how they are going to make healers dynamic and enjoyable with the lack of abilities unless they take out the need for the 1st generic spam ability which would be a very bold move I doubt they will do. I do worry that with ESO trying to design this reactive and dynamic combat system, they don't leave enough spells for this to happen but I guess if they do it right, who can complain? We will just have to wait and see, It sort of worked in GW2 so if they improve on the depth of that I am eager ti see it.

matter of opinion...

in Aion (game with the most skills per class I've played) I had the following skills with my spirit master:

- fear
- fear
- fear
- fear
- silence
- silence
- dispel
- dispel
- dispel
- dispel
- dot
- dot
- dot
- dot
- dot
- dot
- dot
- summon pet
- summon pet
- summon pet
- summon pet
- summon pet
- dispel pet
- pet attack
- pet attack
- pet attack
- pet attack
- dd
- dd + hp-steal
- dd + hp-steal
- shield
- shield

you see how redundant it is without CDs?

It is plenty for me. In most MMOs many of the toolbar slots are weapon/defensive abilities but TESO will have the basic ones mapped to the mouse/keyboard so that will eleviate the need for so many slots. I am very much done with playing MMOs with six rows of buttons all over the screen.

1 generic spam ability

for 'generic spam' you just click left mouse button, no skill slot used for that

I think so. Having far more slots on a hotbar really just does nothing but turn the combat more into WoW style.

More than enough.

There is nothing worse than a screen clogged up with 4 quickbars full of abilities you never use.

Streamlined interface = immersion

I'm not saying there should be a UI stuffed with crap... but 5 skills seems restrictive - I get being immersible but honestly its just no enough to keep me interested.

I am hearing rumblings about their being weapon, armor, race and base skills/buffs aside from the hotbar... as long as that is the case i guess i will have to wait and see how it plays out.

If i am playing a healer in PvP would expect like 10 things to constantly have to think about - buffs, shields, HoT, Cone, Cure Disease, Cure Poison, CC as well as like power ups like MoC (uninterrupted healing - DAoC Realm Abilities) and the list goes on... i'd expect that all with my healing staff or whatever out.

No you're not, it's just that a lot of people hold the opposite side so there's no point in complaining really. I'd be happy with something closer to 15 at least, but eh...

a few people are complaining while many don't? - that's what a minority is!

Man, Matt really wasn't BSing when he said he'd have to please both MMO players and TES players...

One on side you have people complaining that there is a skill bar AT ALL.

On the other side you have people complaining that the skill bar is too small.

I think they went with a somewhat middle ground, leaning more towards TES combat (which wouldn't lend well to a huge skill bar in ANY way)

The combat seems to revolve around mouse1/mouse2 and dodge/sprint, with 5 abilities supplementing that main TES combat theme...

Also I could be mistaken but can't you swap some skills at level 15? That makes it more than just 5.

I can see your point and concern for heavy magic users but I assume that a Healer will have one Quick-bar for just healing and then one for Buffs and another for CC or however they create their list of magic abilities. So a Quick-bar for each type of spell or situation type. I never play magic users but that seems like enough. It could get a bit frantic having to switch between spell types though. Time will tell.

Yes, it's enough.

Think of it like deckbuilding in those old trading card games. I'll use magic: the gathering since it's the one I played and am familiar with - You could have thousands upon thousands of cards available in your collection, but when you go into a tournament do you really want to have a deck made up of 2000 cards? Probably not, and it was against the rules anyways.

You pick a few cards (abilities) that work well both on their own and in connection with the other cards (abilities) that you choose - you create synergy between your cards (abilities) and then employ those synergies to win.

It's a far more tactical and strategic approach to creating your character. Here, we're not relying on the devs to balance 50 abilities per class and have all of them available to everyone at any point in time - instead, the devs balance each ability on its own or in regards to its synergies, and then the players balance themselves out by being able to select a few abilities they like. It's a much easier way of obtaining proper large scale pvp balance than you'll find in a traditional class system or an MMO where you can slot all 50 abilities available to you at once.

Yes, it's enough, and it will promote diversity - which is never a bad thing.

Left and right clicking attacks arent part of the 6 skill slots right? And is the potion slot seperate or is that part of the six? They way I understood it was you get basic attack and power attack on mouse, 5 skills of your choice on the slot bar, then the 6th is an ultimate skill of your choice, plus your potion slot. Is that wrong? If thats the way it is, I think that will be plenty of slots, because there are no cooldowns in this game, and 5-6 skills is plenty to manage resources around.

Actually I was more just using it because it's the best possible reference you can use to due how well it's known.
