My Concerns about the next Quake (If it is to be)

Post » Sun May 05, 2013 7:55 pm

I would like to first note that I am sure everyone has heard, Quake 4 is set to be Re-Released... Cool?
I don't know, Honestly it wasn't my cup of tea, Will I buy it? @#%! Yes!!! Why? I Just said I didn't like it?
A Few reasons Which are as follows;
  • ID Software, even though parented by bethesda now, NEEDS funding on the Quake Franchise. We as a community NEED to show theres still an interest for the Quake Series.
  • I am personally a HUGE fan of the Quake Series, I literally have bought everything it's produced at least once, some more than that.
  • The Re-Release of Quake4 Bodes well for the future of the series if It sells like it should.

But.....................................................................
Other than those listed comments I would appreciate it if the community would Agree or Disagree with me on what is about to follow, as I feel I am hitting the nail on the head.

While Quake4 wasn't, for me, the best of the series... In fact the worst of them. (This is my opinion) It's Still Quake. So I fought my way through it, I destroyed Strogg Armies, and Slaughtered my enemies in every possible manner.
I didn't like what I saw in the game. I am going to list a few things that I disliked.
  • First and foremost, Speed, It was so damn slow! My guy ran like a fatass... Seriously the Gravity on Quake2 was set to 800.. 800 folks. Earths gravity is listed at 1. And my Flak on Quake 2 was at least twice the speed.
  • The Models were boring, no real personality... What happened here? Quake2 and Quake3 had tons of Models and they were exciting, you could imagine a back story on the without there ever being a deep line for them.
  • The Levels. It felt wrong. Too opened maybe? I don't know, The other games had tight corridors with lots of baddies waiting to eat my rockets and I could dodge their fire with my own speed. Q4 levels felt wrong.
  • The Weapons, While we saw a few debuts of the popular originals the new ones were too "Of this world" so to speak, the shotgun and machine guns were not fun. Give me the Quake1 and 2 Variants PLZ!
  • The Graphics engine. While it's obvious that a new one will be used the one for Doom3 was always horrible, even when Doom3 came out it was bad... Just Bad.
  • Co-Op Non-existent... Just bad decision making...

So now that I've gone over a few of the things that made the game bad, in my opinion, I am sure there are other things that made it bad for more people, so I hope the community adds to this. ID and Bethesda need to hear us out on the matter. We're going to bring the fight to you!

I would like to also add a few things that I am going to note for my hopes, and, expectations of the next Quake Game If it shall come to pass.
  • Speed; Please, PLEASE, give us back our velocity. I like Jump maps, Hell, Jump maps are practically what keeps Quake2 Alive, the community for Jump maps are HUGE. It migrated to Quake3, and failed in 4.
  • Models; I said this in my dislikes about 4, but Really, More models, more customization for them, and dont force us to use the same like... 12 different ones. Different classes, Male/Female. Good stuff
  • Weapons; I know, new weapons are a staple for a games success. You must Innovate, Just be as open as possible with the community about the designs and let us give feedback early.
  • Open Source; I know ID Software basically always gives the source, This is a good thing, Keep it that way. Modding is a huge factor in games today, Remember we like to tinker.
  • Maps; Good Multiplayer maps are what keeps the game alive after we've beat it a lot. Include some re-makes... Q2DM1 for example, and no... NOT ICE EDGE.
  • Co-op; This is a must, I can't believe how many times I've beaten Quake 2 with 2 or 3 friends, we ran through it twice a night for 6 months I swear.
I really hope the community reads this and adds to my opinions here. I will edit with updates as well. I am also including a poll to see if my ideals here hold any real merit.

I Don't believe I have much else to add, except, my extreme dis-pleasure with games today. Hardly nothing beats Quake in it's Glory days... Just, bring back the Glory.

I think Q2 had the best level design, Q3 the best sense of speed, Q1 the best original concept. I think Q4 failed in most aspects, it looked like a Halo clone to me. I have no idea why they are re-releasing it. If ID was to make Q5, I think it should take the best from each game. I think Carmack said something like "there is a lot of people who want to make Q5 in a cthulhu-like setting of Q1." Which I think is great.
