I've gone to one art show and it was pretty cool. Of course, here I am this raggedy kid surrounded by the middle-aged and up, not old enough to hold a glass of wine in my hand. Nonetheless, I had a good time and found some really clever art. It was there that I finally broke my negative disposition toward abstract art. I found myself staring into a piece imagining all sorts of things, and with those imaginings came emotions, which is what I think art is all about. Emotion. It was a different experience than googling cool images, that's for sure.
Some of my favorite artwork has to be the stuff in Paradox games, especially Crusader Kings 2. There's something authentic about the images that I just don't get from most other depictions of the medieval ages. One piece of art in particular has stuck with me, though, and that's the http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6f/Peter_Paul_Rubens_Massacre_of_the_Innocents.jpg by Rubens (warning: partial nudity, violence). What I see in this picture is a pragmatic depiction of society, where the strong can and do exert their strength on the weak. It's a harsh reality, and even with their superior strength, they'll still don armor and wield a blade to maximize their authority. It's sad, and I think many of us can relate to both sides in the picture, whether or not we'd like to admit it -- or see it that way (as they are killing children).
Well, this will certainly be an interesting discussion. Looking forward to it.
