The Privileges of Being 18

I'm not surprised you're thinking about potatoes again. Unfortunately, I don't know what potcheen is - some kind of Irish moonshine?

Neither did I, but then again, I don't drink and never plan to. Made my 21st birthday awkward since I had to work on that day and my co-workers made sure to mention to customers that it was my birthday, so the inevitable, "SO ARE YA GONNA DRINK!?" came up and I'd just nervously laugh and say, "Nope. Don't plan to" to their slightly awkward reactions.

Either way, thinking back to five years ago next month (holy crap, has it been 5 years since I turned 18 already? I had been on these boards for two years by then...), my 18th was celebrated by having to work a full shift at my place of employment at the time. Under the law of the state I was working in at the time, I had to leave work by 10PM because I was a minor. Even though the store closed at 9, the 'advlts' usually stayed until midnight cleaning it up because A.) people are messy pigs, B.) peoples' children are even messier pigs, C.) my boss was very anol and a perfectionist. So rather than working 3:30 to 10, I got to work 3:30 to midnight! What a wonderful celebration.

Was that my birthday? I think it was the day after. So yes, that's another thing you can do depending on the labor laws in your state/country/province/realm.

As you can probably gather from the other responses in this thread, you'll learn within the next few months or years that there's nothing great about turning 18, but for now, enjoy it all you can 'cause I'm pretty sure most of us were excited, even if it was just for the number.

I've had to ban myself from going anywhere near potatoes.

Potcheen is absolutely foul: don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Not that they will. You'd think they'd just make some sort of generic potato vodka instead, but nooo, they had to create something that really does smell of nail varnish remover.

you can get in clubs that are 18 to enter but 21 to drink

seriously though happy birthday, squeeze all the fun you can out of your youth because fun naturally dries up as you get older ;)

A few months after I turned 18, there were elections for the House of Representatives. I thought that was a pretty cool way to celebrate my birthday.

too much hype about turning 18 when basically, it only means you are finally leaving the mandatory schooling

I googled it and apparently it can have as much as 90% alcohol. You might as well drink rectified spirit instead. I guess it's useful if you want to get drunk quickly.

We also had elections four month after my 18th birthday. It was right after I moved to a new city and honestly, this was the moment when I felt like an advlt - not my birthday. Nothing really changes until you start living on your own.

Of course it helped that I'm more interested in politics than in alcohol. Illusionary as the choice may be, I'm part of the group making a decision that can potentially affect my life. A bottle of beer doesn't feel nearly as important.

I can also sign contracts, which means I can participate in ESO beta. :hehe: Not that I'm going to get in...

You can go to big boy jail now a lot easier.

18 is over rated. 21 is where it's at.

You arent allowed to have six before you're 18?

Go drink until you can't feel feelings anymore!

Edit: Oh right, you're in the U.S.A.. Don't do that then.

I thought the age of consent was different in every state.

I'm 17, but I'm heading to college a year early. I'm not missing out on much compared to if I was 18. I don't plan an using any of those luxuries, and it's not like I can buy alcohol. Plus the age of consent is 17 in my state, although that still wouldn't matter to me.
