More likely that people would whinge, moan, complain, and generally clog up the forums with rants about "playstation 1 graphics". It happened with Rage's lower-resolution texturing and I don't see any reason why it wouldn't happen with that idea too. Retro-look graphics are a very niche interest.
Why does everyone want to make a Doom RPG? This ideal is an arcade shooter and he can not leave alone. Take it, or come up with another title for RPG. Why cling to that title is?
@Aviar, Doom is not restricted to being a simple corridor shooter, so your idea is invalid.
After all, idSoftware has DoomRPG, Doom2RPG, there is also the board game, so yeah it's perfectly fine for Doom to take on the form of an RPG.
That said, a simple openworld RPG is a terrible idea in my opinion, a waste of their time. If they're going to make an openworld for an old simple game, they should go all out and make it an MMO. The same FPS experience but with endless possible missions/"quests" and forming "squadrons" with friends.
@Jimmy I don't think the retro graphics would hurt it in any way. What happened to Rage was due to the ignorance of people and the fact that it looks much better during the tech5 demo.
With an old-style Doom game that wouldn't happen, people would know exactly what to expect, and with the huge success of Minecraft, we can see that sometimes people do have open arms for retro visuals.
Well anyway, with a singleplayer openworld game of this type they could have an okay success, after all it honestly shouldn't cost that much at all to make it. I just don't think it's worth it.
As far as what I'd wish for, an MMO, it'd probably loose them more money than they'd make; I don't think there are enough people interested in Doom at this time. What a shame.
It certainly would be audacious. I think Doom reboot is being developed on id-tech 5, so it could have huge environments but unless id learned some major lessons from Rage, I can't see the world being very interesting. I hope it's creative and awesome, but given exodus of id's top talent, that might be expecting too much.
“It’s not going well,” said another source. “Poor management, poor organization... [Id] just couldn’t nail down design... It’s just a mess.” http://kotaku.com/five-years-and-nothing-to-show-how-doom-4-got-off-trac-468097062 - Ouch, tell us what you really think anonymous id staffer.
