Is the Gaming Industry Ripe for a Revolution?

This is an interesting article I read this morning.

http://www.cracked.com/article_20727_5-reasons-video-game-industry-about-to-crash.html

It illustrates what I have been thinking now for a while, those who know games best are not allowed to make the games that they want. Yes, there is a lot of money at stake in game development and people want their investment protected as much as possible. But, is this fear of making a bad product that won't sell so invasive that we get stuck with sequels, re-hashes, and new versions that are basically the same as the older version. So, we don't see any boundaries being pushed, we don't have that much diversity in gaming, even across genres, and new releases are not that exciting anymore, because I have already played it.

What do you think?

I think this is where Crowd Sourced games come into play. Take InXile for example. Brian Fargo tried for 20 years to get the sequel to Wasteland made. No one wanted it. He moved on to other projects but really felt that this game needed to be made. Look where that got him.

As for if it's ready or time for a revolution I think that moment has passed. We're already in the midst of a gaming revolution. There are so many more independent game companies out there. There are also a lot more games out there today than a few years ago. Sure, a lot of those games are crap but there are a few good ones.
