Premise for a StoryNovel I am writing, Constructive Critiscm

Post » Mon Nov 05, 2012 2:22 pm

Okay, Just want to say- NO "you copied X idea off Y book and Z film" unless its actually helping.

anyway, now that is out of the way. here is my basic story idea.

In 2046, when the world was on the brink of nuclear war. A Nanovirus was released from a genetic engineering laboratory after a missile strike among other creatures. the strike team sent in were subsequently infected and put into a coma. when recovered from the lab, they were sent back into a PoW camp where they lay in the medical bay. 72 hours after infection their vitals flatlined suddenly. 3 hours later the infected, now very decomposed due to the virus eating the cells of the bodies. within hours, the entire camp was infected and a cloud of gas was originating from there and drifting in the wind. in weeks, the entire planet was encompassed in "The Cloud" and the sky had took a dirty, yellow look. for the first time in years, humanity stopped fighting itself and focused on a new enemy.

But thats the backstory, the actual bit is set 17 years later in 2063.
In a new country which rose from the ashes of the old world while there is an ongoing war between the new european states, the civilians are in a neverending cycle of producing weapons for the military while the unlucky are fighting. Due to failed uprisings, anyone can be chosen at random throughout a year and put into an infested city. this happens once every year and the chosen have to survive for six months. any one left alive at the end is freed and their family is invited to live at the capital, in other words- they can livein conditions almost of the old world, with running water, electricity and food readily available.

the story is set around one of the chosen. oh, and because of me being me, its not necessarily a happy ending >:D

and i havent named any specific countries/ places because i havent decided yet.

any ideas, problems or unexplained stuff? post below! any constructive critiscm welcome!

yes that may be a plot device a few times. Ya know, geneitcally engineered yet. but not quite decided yet. i'm drawing some out so i can look at my drawing for wht they look like.

kinda like cazadores and nightstalkers etc off falout where they were created and now habit everywhere. they would of course be infected to make them more deadly

Okay, I understand now. You may want to have a different reason for the creatures being there, a facility that would specialize in making nano-bots would probably not be involved in any sort of research that would result in creatures like what you described.

i had in mind it was a genetic engineering lab. but that part was almost 2 decades ago, the main story is in the 2060's

Should I be assuming that the Virus is the result of Nanites or a modified Plant Virus?

It was a Nanovirus originally being developed as a superweapon, it got released by a missile strike and infected the entire planet due to late quarantine measures

it was an artificial virus in other words

You have a lot going on to be frank. Nano bots, mutated creatures, virus cloud, zombie-esque infected, and a survival games setting. It sounds convoluted.

Well, its mainly about the people who are chosen to be put into the infected city.

I like thinking backstories.

That's... An Idea.

Now how do you plan on making the idea a reality?

You're right. What this needs is a dash of political intrigue and conspiracy to tie it all together, Gundam Wing style.

Nano irus IS the cloud- cloud infets pretty much everything andmutates stuff, mutating the engineered creatures even more and turning humans into the "zombies"

I dig the nanotechnology angle and the survival games angle, one of my all time favorite books (Deathlands: The Mars Arena) is survival game based. Depending on how you flesh it out it could be good, I just think your discription makes it sound convoluted.

Well, the main story will reflect some of this as 20 years means there will be plenty of survivors from the pre-infestation era. It will be referenced a few times.

The areas where once exposed, you run the risk of being modified by the Nanites.

Yes, I've been thinking of(for people born after "The Event" of having a level of immunity from always having it there. They can be infected from direct contact with individuals or a large exposure to the cloud.

You haven't really given us much, honestly. Kinda reminds me of Hunger Games.

Do you have a chapter or two completed so we can look at? Or did you just come up with this idea?

Unless you have a http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HighConcept, providing a little synopsis of your story doesn't really give anyone much to comment on what you have. Frankly, your premise sounds pretty cliche-ridden. Not through any fault of your own, but because just about everything has been before. Execution is what's needed to determine the quality of a story and in order for me or anyone to provide constructive criticism for it, you need to have some actual material written down.

Look, if you got a solid idea for a setting and a plot, just go for it. Worry about feedback later.

I should be able to post something though I don't When I can post it somewhere. I don't just want to post one big thing on a reply to the thread, anyone know anywhere I could post the first two chapters so I could link to it?

Or.. Or.. Bear (heh) with me..

He could turn it into a game of Werewolf! The premise sounds perfect; I mean, every Werewolf game is a cliche-ridden mess anyway. But instead of sending one person into the city, they send the equal amount of players! :D

Just post it here. Put each chapter in spoiler tags. Make sure you used spell check and that you have paragraphs. Etc. Etc.

Well, they basically drop people into the desolatebut infested city with a backpack, a bottle of water, a little food and a melee weapon. From there, it's a no-rules survival for six months. Escapees are thrown back into the city with nothing or forcibly infected.
