Preping the computer for skyrim

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 12:27 pm

Ok, so im getting skyrim on my computer and ive been doing a lot of cleaning on it to make sure that skyrim will run as good as possible. First thing i dead was a genreal clean up of my computer (removed "clutter" from desktop, reorginized some folders, ect.) then i got rid of a TON of games, ran a ccleaner ( gets rid of temp files) , did a regerstry check, when folder by folder on my harddrive removing anything old/useless . Im going to try out gamebooster tonight and then defrag the computer while i sleep. ill probably play a few games on it tomorrow then i will install skyrim on it as soon as physically possible.

I prepared my computer by sticking a brand new 6950 in there last week. I think I'll be alright for Skyrim. Also defragged my disk yesterday.

Might as well download the latest video driver for your card. It gets updated every couple months especially just before a big game release. Outdated video card drivers is by and large the single largest cause of 'glitches' on release day for most people.

Been ready since late October. New PSU, (old PSU capcitors were leaking!, didn't know till I had a bad feeling about my computer) New GPU upgraded from a GT240, New case, I was using a old HP media center case from 2005 and it had insignificant cooling. Wiped out my hard drives and did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64. Ready to play Skyrim. Clean off my desk today and awaiting for 9pm Thursday in AZ for the download.

*Deleted games i no longer play (Freed up about 120gb of hdd space)
*Defragged my disk
*Ran ccleaner (cleaned + reg)
*Made sure both my OS and my video card is fully up to date
*Made sure my anti virus was updated + ran a full system scan
* Also bought a new power supply + Radeon hd xfx 6870 2gb video card.

just built my computer a couple weeks ago, so its essential empty besides bf3 and civ 5, waiting on my new case to arrive should be here tomorrow. after a few hours playing bf3 i notice my video cards temps are at 101oc. fitting all this stuff in this little case was a bad idea.

Nothing, just sit back and relax until game time. Did free up some space, but I had to do that anyways.

I made sure my CPU and GPU OCs were stable, made sure to get some extra free space on the SSD for install. That's pretty much it, ready to roll!

Vacuumed the inside of my rig, cleaned the fan on the HD5870, installed a fresh 120gig ForceGT SSD with a clean install of Windows 7. Skyrim gets it own boot.

Well I did just delete 60 gigs worth of crap I no longer need from my computer.

I'm getting Skyrim for PS3 though. That was just one of my spontaneous purgings. :P

Thought my PS3 could probably use a nice cleaning. I'll get on that.

Nothing. It's a beast and a defrag won't do too much to my Steam drive because I don't make messes on my hard drives.

Everything's done. Recently resurrected a dead Bone Trail board and moved in. Soonish, I need to get an 8GB RAM kit as I've only a 4GB kit for it right now.

I updated the drivers when BF3 came out, and tonight I'll be doing a windows "Cleanup!" and a defrag.

I did absolutely nothing, other than pre-install the game.

My rig was built with Skyrim and more taxing games in mind some time ago. It eats through Oblivion/Fallout 3/NV with only 1 5870 so I expect Skyrim will be just fine with 2. My I7 950 is OC'd to 4.2GHz to help power the dual cards. 6GB of RAM, and SSD to boot.

Bring it on!

Lol I had a hard drive crash a month ago so I got a SSD and then clean installed windows, got a new 6950 for chits and giggles then watercooled the lot and did some OCing, not for gaming but just for a hobby. Was gonna buy Skyrim on Xbox but since I put all this work into my PC I got it on Steam last night!

I already preloaded the game on my regular Steam drive (1TB x 2 RAID0), mainly because I have other games on Steam and I don't want to fill up my 120GB SSD.
Maybe I'll uninstall Steam completely, then preload just Skyrim again, this time on my SSD.

Heck, I'm even thinking about creating a 8GB RAMDrive and put the game there, since I have 16GB RAM.
That might be a little too much, but I never done this before, and must be amazing to have instant load times.

We'll see, I'll probably try the RAMDrive thing just for the novelty of it.

Please forgive my ignorance: What does it mean to "defrag" a computer?
