I just started the Skyrim game. After playing Oblivion, I am having difficulty picking up and keeping items in my inventory, The x lefts me pick something up - like a shield - but all it does is move around while I move and I am unable to use it or put it in my inventory. Is there a trick I am missing? The only items I have been able to keep are things I take from a chest or a knapsack. I can't even read a book. Any help cause I am feeling like an idiot?

Well, the same button you use to pick up items is the same used to move items around. Sounds like your button may be pressing in too long, so it initiates the grab. Try a more brief press of the button.

I haven't noticed this, but I will keep an eye out for it as well. Generally moving them around helps you sort items quicker
