I tried the Whiterun parallax and found the effect was a bit too pronounced for my tastes, with the (slight) smearing at the raised edges of flagstones being quite jarring to my eyes. Is there a straightforward way of just reducing the depth of the parallax effect a bit so it enhances the normal maps without shouting out so much?
I'm assuming there might be a way of flattening the parallax maps in a texture editing package, but is it possible to do it as a batch process?
@andyw You can reduce the intensity of the effect by reducing the contrast of the parallax map in something such as Photoshop, but you will also need a .dds format plugin to save the file.

I shall start trying to learn how to use GIMP's batch scripting . Thanks for the advice.
