Proper Fix for HD 4000 series with dual core processors

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 5:51 am

Finally got it to work properly (I didn`t install the new patch so I don`t know if this will work for the people that patched the game already).

Specs: E6320 @2.8ghz
Hd 4850 512 mb ddr3
windows 7 32bit

step 1
Remove/rename all of your config files and do the same for atioglxx.dll from the game folder

step 2
Install AMD Catalyst? 11.10 Preview Driver Version 2 (and do not disable the Catalyst A.I), if you already have the preview diver just enable catalyst A.I

step 3
In your Steam library, right click RAGE, click Properties, and click the Set Launch Options button and add this +com_skipIntroVideo 1 +seta com_allowconsole 1 +vt_maxPPF 8 +cvaradd jobs_numThreads -1

stept 4
Don`t play the game in window mode! use the full screen option.

Step 5
PLAYYY

Also if you still have some problems try this aswell: go to your rage folder in steam (example C:\program files\steam\steamapps\common) and right click rage.exe and hit Properties, from there go to Compatibility and check following Disable visual themes, Disable desktop composition, Disable display scalling on high DPI settings.

Do this now and reply asap!

What does "+vt_maxPPF 8" exactly do? Something to do with dual core processing?
Also, can't you put "+jobs_numThreads 0" in Launch options so you wouldnt have to do it console?

Wow. I put the line: +com_skipIntroVideo 1 +seta com_allowconsole 1 +vt_maxPPF 8 +jobs_numThreads 0 into the launch options with spectacular results. No stuttering and no artifacts whatsoever. Even the texture popping seems to be improved. I still have one core of two running at 100% which probably isn't healthy in the long run, but the game runs very smoothly and looks so much better.

I guess that as I didn't use the in-game console and wasn't starting a new game that the " +com_skipIntroVideo 1 +seta com_allowconsole 1" part of the command is redundant.

It works, but yes.. both of my cores are at 100% which isnt good. There is no difference if I set lowest video options or highest, its just the CPU problem for me it seems, and probably for many others too.
Having it cause that much burden for CPU is not very healthy yes and it's tacky ofcourse, so I ought to wait if there is something that can be done with that.

I checked the CPU temperatures with both Coretemp and Hardware Monitor. The highest temperature that either of the cores climbed to was 48 degrees Centigrade. That was with 20 minutes play.

The maximum safe temperature is 72c with 60c being the recommended sustained max.

I think it's safe but I won't be entirely satisfied until the game recognises my video card and lets my GPU do the heavy rendering work instead of hammering the CPU for everything. If I understand things correctly a driver patch from ATI/AMD should fix that for Dual Core systems with ATI/AMD cards.

vt_maxPPF 8 its used for dual core processors (it can be set to 4 I guess if you wish). Values between 32 and 64 are for quad core cpus.
+jobs_numThreads 0 will not work if used from launch (it may work if you have the new patched instaled, for me it will only work if I manualy type it via console from the game menu)

And if your cpu is at 100% it`s not a problem this game is not made to strees test your cpu like Prime or intelburn test, it will not make your cpu reach huge temps.

Thanks, OP! I followed your instructions, with the patch installed, and now the game plays as it should, except for one small problem. Whenever I try to leave the Hagar Settlement and head back to Wellspring, the game freezes. Hopefully a fix for this can be found as well.

I belive this is a patch bug, but you can try to add this +com_safemode 1 to your Launch Options and see if it will fix your problem.

Good fix, but I still get around 20 FPS. And it crashes when I enter Fez bar in Subway Town.

I loaded a previous save from when I was in Wellspring, after that I was able to get the crossbow from Dan Hagar and head back to Wellspring without any problems. I've played a few missions, and so far it's working pretty good. I get on average 40-60 FPS, with frequent dips to the 30s. Every once in a while it will drop below 10, but always recovers shortly after.

Do you use a rageconfig file? if you do, then rename it or move it from the base folder and create the folders id software\rage in your appdata\local, here is an example C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Local\id software\rage\

People that get constant freezes do what I said above, make the folders and see if the problem still persist, reply asap with results!

I dont know about this....where's your source on this as my cpu usage is pegged @ 100 percent and I'm pretty sure doing that will shorten the life of a cpu.

At any rate, I'll just say that it's great it works and some of you are getting to play, but just remember enabling the console prevents achievements...I know it doesn't bother some of you as long as you get to play it, just letting you know.

E5200 2.5GHz @ 3.6GHz
2GB RAM
HD4850 1GB

11.10 Preview 2 DRIVER ONLY + ATI Tray Tools (no CCC!)
Patched RAGE
Cache folder created for both 7 and XP
Additional parameters: +com_skipIntroVideo 1 +jobs_numThreads 0

Windows 7 32bit - Game seems fine, but better performance in XP means I am not going to play it at all in Windows 7
Windows XP - Game runs pretty damn good. Some ugly texture pop-in, but nothing game-breaking

stept 4
In the main menu of the game bring down the console and type jobs_numThreads 0 (You will need to do this every time the game starts)
And don`t play the game in window mode! use the full screen option.

You don't have to type every time. Add it like this with the rest of parameters you mentioned: +cvaradd jobs_numThreads -1

A game will never ever fully strees out a cpu, want proof? fire up prime95 or intelburn test and check the temps of your processor, then play rage and look at temps and you will understand.
And for the crappy achievements (does rage even have something like that on pc? ) they should work because your not messing with gameplay mechanics aka cheating. Don`t forget it`s not our fault that the game doesn`t work properly, we paid for what? for true RAGE that we can`t play the bloody game?

@ mitchalek thanks for the info

@tzen did you try to use this command in the launch option +com_safemode 1 , reply with results

UPDATE: I had an old (11.8 or Rage Preview 1 maybe) ATI OpenGL driver dll in my Rage folder which was causing the game not to start in XP. It was possibly also causing the crashes in Windows 7.

I will play the game for a bit in XP to see how stable it is now. Thanks again.

Nice of you to post help, but I'm not all that great at doing the things you said should help, so I'll just have to wait and hope that they actually make a patch or something that doesn't require somebody else to do their work for them. Doubt it will come out any time soon though, but here's to hoping many of us PC gamers didn't just waste 60 dollars on a game.

Well this works for me

Core 2 duo 6600
HD4850
11.10 preview drivers catalyst on.

Thought i'd tried all tweaks but seemed i didn't have them in the right combo.

One thing, why does the game cancel achievements despite my NOT adding the console option? I'm not a Achievement ****** but i dislike it when a game feature is disabled for no legitimate reason.

Anyway pc.players.smarter.than.jc , Congrats and thanks it seems the name you chose holds some truth. lol.

DUDE!

After like a week of trying various fixes and tweaking, this made the game perfect. No freezes, no texture artifacts.
Added +com_skipIntroVideo 1 +seta com_allowconsole 1 +vt_maxPPF 8 +cvaradd jobs_numThreads -1 to shortcut and that did it.
And everyone else pay attention, its not jobs_numThreads 0 , but -1.

I have ATI HD5750
Athlon x2 250

Another fix. This does not run the game as intended. Streaming texture pop-in crap is completely unacceptable. Why would anyone play with this issue?

Not to knock the OP, commendable post. Seriously. Yet everyone's time here would be better spent calling Todd Hollensworth's office, and AMD screaming and yelling about how pissed off we truly are.

Cutting ID, gamesas, or AMD any slack at this point is stupid. I'm so sick of development houses getting away with this type of shoddy release behavior. ANY other product released in the US under these types of conditions would have a the FED hounds sniffing through filing cabinets and forcing a recall of the product, and the DOJ would be heading up the class action lawsuit.

Can I vote with my wallet? Sure. Yet not this time, as it seems like I've just handed $60.00 to the retailer out of the kindness of my heart, and given a faulty product.

I only got the problem, that i can't look any youtube ore other internet videos... the sound is just normal, but i see a everything green =(
this is definitly caused by the 11.10 pre2 driver, because evrything else worked!
