Considering it isnt trying to take on WoW, nor is it using WoWs gameplay mechanics....... it wont end up dead for trying to be a WoW killer

Reaction to this MMO is pretty negative all across the internet. Most TES fans won't play it, and MMO fans will stick to WoW and GW2. Yeah, it'll bomb.

Reation to most games on the internet is negative, yet coD sells millions every new release.

It's the second part of my quote that you should pay the most attention to. Regardless, I don't think this will do well. Most likely, it will become F2P after a year.

I wish they would just cut their losses and never release TES:O. All this will do is cheapen the series, and probably eff with the lore.

Hahahaha!

I could just imagine the TES guy walking into the cave and, moments later, one could hear "STOP RIGHT THERE, CRIMINAL SCU--" echoing from the darkness right before his skeleton comes flying out.

Why is WoW held up to some standard that every MMO has to "beat" in order to be successful?

Yes, WoW was extremely profitable, but does that mean the product was "good"? When WoW slithered out of Blizzard's diseased loins, the MMO industry was set back decades. If you really care about the "legacy" of TES or lore, or whatever, you should pray to god that this TES:O is nothing like WOW or even aspires to be.

Bottom line, WoW's recipe for success isn't the only viable business model, and "popular" doesn't always mean "good".

Hah! What a brilliant picture. I think the only thing that could defeat WoW is WoW itself.

Considering the time period it's taking place in, the game would have to be around for a long time to have any effect on the lore. Oh, and they also get consultants from BGS to help make sure they stay true to the lore of the series.

Try not to let pesky facts get in the way of a knee-jerk reaction though.

That pic is pretty much spot-on.

Those "dead" MMOs might not exactly be dead, but let's face it. Once WoW proved to be a hit, everybody wanted a piece of the pie, and nobody's managed that yet.

So TES:O might sell. It might even sell well. But it won't be a WoW killer.

sums it up.

the problem is that Zenimax doesnt seem to understand that these days you cant be as successfull as WoW, WoW comes from a different time where it had no real contestants and people sticking out of familiartiy and of course the polish that can only come from years of patches and expansions. You cant hope to ever get the same playerbase, let alone on launch!

I think many people might be missing the point of many people's concerns.
It is posible that The Elderscrolls Online is not trying to compete with WoW. But whether TES:O wants to get in that fight or not, the second you jump into the MMO gaming world you are already trying to compete with WoW. Until WoW finally dies from old age (which who knows when that may happen. But it has been slowly getting smaller) or another MMO actually delivers the crippling blow to WoW that will release WoW's complete stranglehold on the MMORPG world (though it doesn't at all have to die), you cannot "not" compete with WoW. That's just how much WoW dominates the mmo market, and that is how wide and devoted their fanbase is.

It depends on how much of what we've seen is the whole product.

If what we've seen can be extrapolated in to the final product, then yes, it'll go the way of Tabula Rasa.

well so far its very likeley they want to compete with WoW wich is always coming with failure. Even WoW players mostly dont want that WoW kinda gameplay anymore, they dotn watn it be done better, you cant. WoW got all the polish, you can only just step up from that system and actually innovate.

I think it will fail big time. It will probably be popular for the first 2-3 months but then everyone will forget about it and go play wow again...

WOW earns lots of money, this makes other want to replicate it.
Now the safest way to do this is to make something like WOW but better.
The problem here is that WOW is huge and has lots of features, if you can't do better at launch date you don't compete, and you have to match WOW today not 10 years ago.

The other way to do it is to make something different, EVE online did this and it work well.
Yes you could do an compromise, something somewhat better and so much different that you draw and keep part of the customers.

Obviously, question is how many MMO does turn profit and how many just earn enough money to keep the servers running but not to pay back the huge investment of making it.

The thing is, most people in here have no clue about MMORPGs.

Those kind of games can make profit even without scratching the 1 Million Player Mark.

But some weird hillbilly logic states that MMORPGs can only be profitable if they beat WOW in terms of Sale and subscription.

You would be surprised to see that, for example games from Turbine (LOTRO, D&DOnline) turn out to be highly profitable after they went F2P.

Rift, Age of Conan, EVE Online ect also do fine in terms of income for their Publisher.
