Proximity Alarm in campaign?

Does it actually do anything? No matter where the enemy is, I can't hear it at all. Is it because I'm using TV speakers, or is it that quiet all the time? Is it this bad in Multiplayer? Is it nice and loud at level 3? Louder than campaign?

I think it makes a beeping or pulsing sound that gets closer together as you get closer to the enemy...sorta like the one in the Aliens movies but with a different tone to it.

I tried it too, but never realized any change... Used the bullet path to determinate the location of the enemy instead.
