PS3 Fat or PS3 Slim

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:47 pm

I know that with my PS3 Fat Fallout 3 was unplayable, even after all the patches, parts of the map and certain quests were broken. When I got a PS3 Slim, I bought the game again and the game ran very smooth only freezing once.

I was wondering if you could list which console you're playing on Fat (Phat) or Slim and rate the severity of your problems from 1-10. A 1 being very few/no problems and a 10 being game/console - breaking

My info:

PS3 Slim 120gb

Rating - 4 - I am having glitches and freezes but the majority of my time is spent having fun

PS3 Voluptuous (I feel mean calling my baby fat :() 80gb

Rating - 6 - It'll start freezing if I play the game say about six to eight hours straight but it'll then be fine if I leave the console turned off for a couple of minutes when I grab something to drink. There's been a few glitches where enemies spawn in rocks or the ground, or I'll load a save and a companion will just drop dead. The former doesn't occur very often (and gives me an advantage anyway) and the latter is fixed by just loading the same save again.

Saying that, the second day of playing I had to start again from scratch because my save was completely unplayable. Fortunately I hadn't gotten up to much. My first character was damn ugly anyway. :)

I've got a Fat 60 gig PS3 with an upgraded Fat 60gig PS3 with an upgraded 250 GB HD.

I've gotten stuttering but no crashes so far. I rate it a tentative 3. I haven't run into any broken quests but I'm not that far into the game.

Also, I turn of the internet, notifications and auto-saves while playing.

Saying if it's fat or slim doesn't do much, cause there'd 3 generations of fat models and only 1 slim.
I got 2nd gen, 80gb, I'll give it a 1. Only thing I'm frustrated at is currently I walked beyond some killzone spot and my autosave is right where everything aggros me... with no health left... without any real way to continue..... and I fail for having my last save be 4 hours before that.

The model of PS3 is irrelevant to the performance of the game. I have a fat 80 gig and I've never had any problems with Fallout 3. A PS3 is a PS3 regardless of its size. They all use the same firmware and are all built with the same parts.

Lol, considering the fact the PS3 went from having a PS2 inside it to having no PS2 support at all, means there is difference within the models, not to mention 4th gen (slim) has been reported to have a significantly higher failure rate then the first 3 generations.

It doesn't matter.. They all play games the same way. Unless you take care of your PS3 poorly (or just get a lemon) it will be just fine. Different PS3 models don't run games any different.

1st Gen 60GB (Phat)

If I try HD resolution 10 - Completely unplayable (Screen consistantly goes "black")

if I try SD resolution - 2 - Lots of "stuttering" and a freeze every 10 hours or so. Plus the usual NPCs Spawning in rocks, Roy (one of the dogs from Novac's junk yard) started following me after I got Boon as a companion. Haven't had any Broken scripts yet. (I fully expect to given my experience with Oblivion and FO3)

PS3 Fat not sure of the HHD size. (i think it might be 60 or 80)

7 out 10 in terms of problems mainly caused by the game freezing when i get near Novac and a bug that nearly costed me my entire save (had luckily made a back up on a thumb drive before the problem hit), has well as 4-5 freezes that happen after the load screen takes 4 times longer then normal to finish followed by the game lagging horribly for up to 10 seconds before the system just locks up, i refuse to beleive its caused by my system overheating after 6-8 hours for the plain fact that its never happened with any other game even after 8-10 hours, even FO3 never froze on me dispite multiple times of playing it bewteen 8 and sometimes 12 hours striaght.

Also a number of other problems from enemies falling though the ground (never happened in FO3) and at least several instances of my char being randomly thrown into the air high enough to take damage, V.A.T.S also seems to randomly switch bewteen workly fine to not working at all (mainly failing at the worst possible time), and a freeze that happened after maybe an hour of playing while i was shooting gaint scorpions north of Goodsprings followed 2 hous later by a freeze when i walked up to the gate to the Gun Runners base.

The games still fun but with so many freezes and other problems theres always the thought in the back of youe mine that your entire save could be destroyed by a serious bug at pretty much anytime and there would'nt be jack you could do about it.

I have a 2 USB port 80GB FAT PS3 (last model of the FAT PS3's), and let me say I HAVE NOT HAD ONE SINGLE PROBLEM!!! Absolutely nothing!! No freezes, frame-rate slow-down, problems with quests or companions, and I'm over 40 hours in (level 22). I actually don't care if the PS3 ever gets a patch, game works just fine for me.

I've experienced FO3 on both the Fat 40GB, yes that is the very first generation, and my current 120GB Slim. I only experienced If I remember correctly about 3 freezes at most on the 40GB, that was before any patches but I can admit that with the 120GB on FO3 which I played the other day it felt much more smoother. As well as this on my slim I have only experienced when freeze which was during loading an area. It is not as bad as some people here are getting, I think the older generations are more prone but in general the systems aren't handling the game the way it should, fault of the programmers.

2 - Outside of two crashes over what must be about 20 hours now, a bugged merchant, a few creatures falling through the ground and that "every 1-3 minute" hiccup, I'm loving the game.

First gen PS3 fat CECHA01 originally 60GB upgraded with a Seagate Momentus 7200RPM 16MB cache 500GB. HD model ST9500420AS. Providing extra details on the hard drive because I believe it to be a possible player in my stability...

I think you have that backwards. Its the fats that have the problems. the slim works great. I have also read alot about the two and found most people having ps3 issues have a fat. I was one of them, not with the slim, no issues.

do any of you guys know if there's a place to take a PS3 and have some upgrades done to it??
or is that only possible on a x-box??

I'm going to have to look into this in more depth, it might be nice to have some hardware upgrades
to beef the machine up a bit...

I have a Fat (phat) PS3, and Fallout 3 and New Vegas both work quite well, I've had about 4 freezes since launch on New Vegas, but never had problems at all for Fallout 3.

So, I'd say maybe a 2/10 for FNV, 0/10 for FO3.

First Generation Slim PS3 120GB.

I'm going to give it a 9/10. The game is mostly broken for me, regardless of how much, or how little, I try to play. The bugs just come one right after another with the input and frame rate lag being the most egregious. Thankfully I have not had the Strip bug or any black screen/corrupted save bugs. But that doesn't detract from the fact that I can't play the game in medium to large scale battles because the input lag prevents me from being able to shoot, use stims, use chems, et cetera, before being killed.

My console is fine. Other graphically intense games run fine and marathon PS Move sessions have been perfect.

Launch 60gig. Oblivion and FO3 ran beautifully without ever an issue.

As for NV I'd rate it a 3. Frame rate hiccups are pretty regular (a pause for a second while walking around). I've had 3 total freezes in the first 20 hours but none since. All my freezes came after playing four hours or more. Now after four to five hours (or if I experience any serious frame rate issues) I shut down my PS3 for a few and then start it back up. Since I've been doing that I've been fine. I haven't tried turning off auto saves. Maybe I'll do that.

My Fat baby died... I miss those 4 ports and backwards compatibility. My Slim (120 Gig) is fine. You'll always encounter freezing, lockups and so on. It can be from many things such as poor condition, getting hot cause' you've been on it for way too long or it's just the game itself.

Though before I got my YLOD (I shared my PS3 with my younger brother until he got his own. The svcker was always on and hardly ever got a break) it really started to freeze on almost every game I played. Fallout 3 included.

As of now I've only had two lockups with New Vegas. I've put in about 12 hours in.
