PS3 problems solved

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 10:21 pm

Yeah so RAGE on PS3 ran like [censored]... it started out running "ok" then to bad and ending up running like complete [censored]

I have now fixed it... heres what you do

1. backup your save games either to a USB dongle or PSN+ online storage

2. go to system settings and format the PS3.... just do the quick format

3. go to ps store and re-download the RAGE files

4. start up the game and download the update

5. ENJOY THE GAME! NO lag, NO long loading times and most of all: NO more texture stream problems WHAT SO EVER!

Play the game as it was meant to be played

Your welcome ;)

It sure doesn't fix the pop in my case. MAYBE it's slightly better, but I think It's still very noticeable.

Can we have some proof of this? I mean you can't expect people going to format their ps3's with no evidence what so ever that this is going to work. Also, what kind of PS3 do you have: fat, slim?

Layman> how exactly could i prove it ? there's no way

It was a last desperate attempt to get the game running so it was at least playable... i never knew it would pay off as much as it has :)

I played it for an hour straight and still no texture pop up

im on a slim btw :)

Me a PS3 "hater" ? are you [censored] serious ???

i have been onboard with playstation since 1996.... i cannot (nor would i want to) even begin to calculate how much money i have spent on playstations over the years

I love their consoles ( even though they have a nasty habbit to spend big on their hardware and skimp where it matters most... like the laser units)

so me a PS3 hater ? GTFO

This would be the same as doing a normal backup to external hd, formatting and doing a restore?

If so, then no it does not work for me. Just did above said yesterday. Its something i regularly do it every couple of months just to tidy up the file structure.

Unless you mean something else like backing up to psn+ but isnt that just the save game files?

Is it possible to do a full backup of something like 50gigs to psn+?

What was the size of the HDD you had in your PS3 and formatted?

So is the HDD really slow because it's old and fragmented?

Or is the HDD too overloaded?

So you are saying to minimize what's on the drive and it'll read faster, easier and without lag?

Any thoughts on why this worked and improved performance?

Could you reply to me a VERY SPECIFIC list of how to do this? Thanks.

Should you do the game install before the patch?

Interesting idea.
But before you format the whole HDD and have to install everything again, I would try to "fix" the HDD with the rebuilt database option.
This can sometimes have the same effect as a fresh format (improves loading, stability etc) but without loosing every data.
The only thing that gets deleted are playlists and messages you wrote with friends. Saves, installes, downloaded content stays on the HDD.
But of cause, not a bad idea to make a backup just in case!

to access the rebuild database option:
1. Press the on/off button of your PS3 and keep it pressed. The light goes green and the PS3 makes 3 beeps and shuts off again. Release the button.
2. Repeat 1, but this time after the first two beeps the PS3 will make a very quick "double beep", then release the on/off button.
3. You see a menu with number 4 being "rebuilt database"
4. The process will take between some minutes up to several hours
As a sidenote, video settings will be reset the next time you start your PS3. That's unavoidable and happens during step 1 at the second beep.

I used this method, when my HDD acted very slow, a 1GB demo took like 20-30min to install. Rebuilding the database fixed this for me and the HDD is fast again. So it might help with rage, if texture pop ins are more frequent as normal because of reduced HDD speed in the same way, a full format would help, but without having to reinstall everything again.

Wow, this worked for me. I mean, yeah texture pop in still exists, but not nearly to the degree it used to. I imagine people with a lot of stuff on their hdd's are probably getting even worse pop-in then i was from the get-go. Seriously try this everyone.

I'm more than willing to try again. Did you do the format or rebuild database option?

Wait, so this is confirmed to work?
I tried what Copycat said and it seemd to decreas the "pop on approach" but there were still problems when looking left/right and turning.

I can confirm this theory is not working  on my system.

Just spent last 4.5 hours backing up, format and restore (again) and texture pop is exactly as before. No improvement!

Ps3 slim + 7200rpm 320gb wd caviar black in case anyone cares.

Have you also tried format + fresh install?

Nope. And i won't try that because i have only one other game installed. GT5.

From what i know, format + restore is sufficient to rearrange file structure or optimize structure fragmentation. Ps3's file system does not really fragment files like windows, its more like files are spread all over the place with free space in between.

Now I have tried both a quick format and a full format. Sadly neither made much difference.

My PS3 died and was sent in for repairs late spring/ early summer and when I got it back it had a new HDD installed.

I'm thinking maybe some of the PS3 complaints I'm hearing sound worse than mine because I really don't see enuff motivation to format the drive and do a fresh install. Maybe something with this new HDD is letting me run it better than folks here with older drives.

I didn't pull apart the PS3 to see what drive they put in as a replacement.

Anybody know what Sony swaps in when you send a PS3 back for repair?

Mine's a PS3 Slim 250GB.

My 320gb is barely 3 weeks old. Swapped it with the original 120gb and have only installed gt5 since then. Left the rest of my games out in view of Rage's arrival. Lol.

Well mine is a old 40GB phat machine but the HDs Sony use probably gets minor changes over time so that might explain why some have less/more problems than others. Like the 360 sometimes uses Samsung DVD-drives, sometimes they use Hitachi. It's not like they use the exact same components throughout the whole console generation. Usually there is no difference in performance but sometimes there might.
