The whole thing with games is that for some people it's a hobby. Personally they're works of art, you have acting, drawing, painting, sculpting, story writing, all these on their own is an art. Landscapping and painting the terrain to make it look "real" is an art in and of itself. People immerse themselves in games to get away from their lives for a while. With the poor economy, some coming from broken homes, not knowing if they'll actually live to see tomorrow because of street violence or even violence in their homes. A lot of our players are under 21, live at home still and some are not in the best of worlds. Games like Skyrim allow for a release, just for a little while to actually feel better. To get away for just a little bit. To enjoy themselves, it's why we goto concerts, movies, sport games, out with friends, read books and be immersed in the story. Videogames can immerse players with the story being told, the world presented to them. It is people whom like myself as I'm finishing my Associates Degree in Game Development will be making these games, to engross players in worlds and story. To bring enjoyment to others. THAT is the big issue, that enjoyment and basically giving people a small taste of freedom and salvation for just a little bit which might save their lives somehow. Preventing some from self harm and other tragic events to themselves, because the story might inspire them. I've played games longer than what some of the customer base has been alive(I'm 28 and first game I played was Pong at the age of 4). I've played role-playing games a large portion of my life and still do now. For a company to break the hopes of players to continue that small bit of hope is a very painful reality and it hurts. So yes it is a big deal to some people, and some of the demographic that the game has reached probably has been touched. The story itself makes you choose a side where there's no clear right or wrong. Save the province from a dieing empire, or try to renew order and keep it apart of the empire? We recently had an election in the US with very similar consequences. Politics aside, you have a company which makes games that brings great enjoyment and time of peace and happiness who then goes dead silent when a portion of their demographic is seemingly ignored, given very little news and constantly sees that they're pushed aside.
To my personally as a student going into the Industry, it's a learning experience one of which that I'll carry with me for a long time. Don't ignore your customer base, try to keep them as much in the know as possible even if it may break the "status quo". You keep the customers in the know, you'll have their trust better and they'll support and invest in you in the future. I understand that the problem greatly deals with memory allocation and purging from what I understand. I will openly admit, I still wouldn't mind working for Bethesda as a level designer. Just moving to their location is hard to justify in reality right now. So for now I do modding to build experience in how to design good levels, learning what does and does not work.
Long story short.. while as a PS3 and PC gamer I am greatly disheartened and sometimes disgusted and yet amused by how things are going and the whole issue. I understand completely, I sit back watch keep an eye on it. And do other things, my education, career and life are more important, and besides there's other games out there both old and new I can play to pass the time. I wish we get DLC as I'd like to sit with my console and enjoy playing the game. I wish luck to Bethesda and to my fellow PS3 Skyrim owners. Just if you want change, do something.
