PTT: solution to voip

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 5:46 pm

i was reading about the VOIP and the devs in trying to find a solution to trash talking ect and undermining the game experience for others with other players talking.

so i am wondering, did you ever think of ptt: which is press to talk system. Socom has this system and it works really really well. people in socom use the system to call out commands only and its the prefect system for voip.

other features from socom in this matter is that only one person in the team can speak at a time.

also as a extra addition a time limit while talking.

this should be an option and if you dont have any buttons to put PTT, then maybe integrating into an already existing button function such as: press the button to open the command wheel or hold it down to talk.

this should be another option instead of talking or not talking set up

you should have no talking, PTT, and party chat

were party chat is were if you have a party of friends you can talk freely with them while the other members of your team cant. because with games like cod people are using mics as a free chatting sevice with friends, and are using it as chatting and playing at the same time so its enjoyable.

If anything, PTT would replace the standard "on" setting, since it still doesn't solve trash talking at all - they just have to push a button before they trash talk. This is why they have off (friends only) and on. People who choose on, obviously don't care about it, and those who have it off (the default setting) can still hear friends in game if they want.

I don't think theres a solution for trash talking which is 100% effective. The problem with the whole on/off solution is that some times people will get really frustrated shouting at a medic but doesnt realise he can't actually hear you. A in game quick mute button can be effective to a certain degree, ie press it to mute the player currently talking, as well as a black list. Of course on/off settings should also be available. Like I said, nothing will eliminate trash talking completely.

Main thing is servers with good mods, where excessive trash talking will get you suspended or banned.

But PTT would stop you from hearing every insult- they'd have to specifically push a button.

I've shouted at the screen many times when playing MP games. That doesn't mean I want to broadcast it. I'd be all for PTT, although it might be better on PC rather than console.

Sure there is - turn it off.

The problem with the whole on/off solution is that some times people will get really frustrated shouting at a medic but doesnt realise he can't actually hear you.

Players don't need to yell at the screen, since 99% of the things you do, are displayed and broadcasted in game. If you need a Medic for a revive, just select "wait for Medic" on screen, and Medics on your team will get a new objective to revive you, and they will here your character (in his voice) say, "I need a Medic!" or something similar. If you are under fire at the objective, your character will automatically broadcast that you need assistance. They implemented this system, for the very reason so players do not HAVE to rely on voice chat to relay orders to each other.

But PTT would stop you from hearing every insult- they'd have to specifically push a button.

Ok...I say "FU," but forget that it is PTT...then I simply hold down the button and say "FU" again...it's quite simple.

I've shouted at the screen many times when playing MP games. That doesn't mean I want to broadcast it. I'd be all for PTT, although it might be better on PC rather than console.

So apparently, you only shout these "things you don't want to broadcast" in games where it is ptt, and in games where chat is always on, you never say anything you don't mean to say?

well i should recorrect that trash talking wont be completly removed but it will help

most people rage shortly after a kill or death, when you have PTT they will forget to hold down the button

sure you will get the guy who will rage about the lack of team work

but you wont get:

1. music
2. baby/background sounds
3. trash talk after kill or death
4. gaming orgisms after a awesome kill or death
5. only one person speaking at a time

but at the same time you will get;

1. open communication with all teammates
2. better teamplay is a result of open communication
3. new friendships form from players talking together
4. talk is limited to small bursts not long rants

those are the benefits but i say have it an option really

I have to agree with Horse on this, it's simply not a great solution. While I'm sure there would be some good people actually listening, a lot of us would probably be playing with friends in party chat. Let's the talking to the autopvssyr.

the reason i am wrote this is How could people play such a team focused game with fully on-line players with no communication between players

another good idea is text chat for all platforms

something pc is benefited with but maybe they could integrate PS3 XMB chat system into the game so when you press the home button you can write text fast if you choose to do so and its displayed on the screen. simular for xbox as well. thats not a bad idea

but is there any confirmation that you can call out stuff like there are call out options in the game, such as move here or there, need support, need backup etc

that's just it, with the objective wheel, you don't need talk, the game itself tells you what needs to be done

AUTO-pvssyr... your team knows what needs to be done because they hear you say it. If you are trying to tell them to do a specific mission, then perhaps you should change class and do it yourself. If you are having problems and need assistance, your guy yells for backup every time you get pinned down.

PS3 has a chat room for text chat. I'm sure Xbox has the same.

You haven't played many PC games, have you? I grew up playing shooters on PC, back when all they had was type chat, and voice chat wasn't an option. In fact, the only time I ever used voice chat was in my clan days, because it was mandatory. You learn to read your team, and anticipate things to come. Good Communication doesn't make a good team - good teammates do. Communication might make it easier or more efficient, but by no means are they necessary to have a coordinated squad. Besides, as mentioned above, the game has an auto-pvssyr system, that relays all the important commands automatically.

The ONLY thing you need is a "mute" button and the problem is solved.

Is it? play a myriad of games on XBL with only a mute button option - you'll get carpal tunnel from all the time you hit it.

The way they did it makes sense - you can only hear your friends by default, with the option to hear who you want. I don't see why people suggest ptt or mute buttons, since they seem redundant and basically provide the same solution that SD's method does.

I don't get why everyone is shooting down push to talk. Personally, I like it. It's convenient, and helps cut out useless babbling, since people choose what to broadcast and what not to, as opposed to always on. Pushing to talk to your team, backed up by a mute button seems like the way to go, to me. It's what a lot of games do and I greatly prefer it over any other system I've come across. Most people don't abuse it, and you can very easily mute the people who do. At most, on the servers I've played on, that maybe means muting two people over the course of a play session. Well worth the convenience, if you ask me. Furthermore, having to make the choice to talk helps make most of the chat more tactical as well. It just provides more freedom.
