Just came to the realisation that the pure mage build requires a full on commitment if you want balance/mastery in all magic schools. Sprinkle in Vampirism and you really have to be patient during character development.

It's very fun but there is work involved to make sure you're practicing your schools properly. Plus you have to be sure about the perks youre picking. The fighter build was so mindless and simple compared to this, though I sometimes miss it.
