[REQ] Purge cell buffer mod?

Post » Thu May 24, 2012 7:19 am

Is there one? I am doing this manually at the moment but it really does have a huge impact on performance after a couple hours of playing typing pcb into the console will indeed give you a decent fps boost but sometimes I forget so.. I'm sure it would be pretty easy but i am not familiar with scripts or I would do it myself.

Documents\My Games\Skyrim\skyrim.ini
[BackgroundLoad]bSelectivePurgeUnusedOnFastTravel=1
If set to 1, this option removes a range of unnecessary data when you Fast Travel to another location. This can help keep memory usage down for those with less RAM, so it is recommended such people set this to 1, otherwise leave it at 0.

I have no idea if it works, however.

Well I have 8 gigs of RAM but I'm not sure if that tweak has the same effect as using pcb in the console. Sometimes if I forget to type it in after awhile, after I do I sometimes get an extra 10 -15 fps. This was always the case with fallout as well. It's a simple enough mod I'm sure someone could create in a few minutes. Maybe even import it from FNV??

I don't think PCB can be called from a script. Besides, you wouldn't want it to call during combat, during certain quests, etc. I think the best answer is to just do it manually. :shrug:

Well there has been a mod that does this for Oblivion, FO3 and FNV so I don't know why there can't be one for Skyrim. Not sure exactly if the mods from the past would use the command PCB directly but they would somehow purge the cell buffer. I believe it only happened on fast travel in order to avoid such issues.

The reason it's unlikely to be possible for Skyrim is that most of the old console commands like that can't be called via scripts anymore. It's also entirely unnecessary and probably not recommended. For all its faults, this game has the efficiency side of things down cold lately.

However, if someone really needed the functionality and believed it was useful, we could expose the functionality again through SKSE. In previous games (Oblivion, Fallout 3, New Vegas) this was exposed simply by invoking the console command. We would have to do things slightly differently - but it would be pretty easy. I will add it to the list. There ought to be enough information available through Papyrus to detect a "good" time to invoke this. I am not strictly sure it is necessary, however if folks find it useful we can provide it.

It's extremely usefull. Before 1.4 I used it a lot, almost always successfully and now that I tend to run Skyrim while I am using the CK for testing, I tend to use quite frecuently too. Never gives me a CTD.

Hmm, I didn't think about having to stop the pcb'ing after going up to 1.4. I have been having so many CTD's and it's been driving me crazy. Could it be my habit of typing pcb?? If so, would there be any way to sort of clean my save? Because once I start getting the CTD's even if take off all my mods I still crash.

No, pcb didn't cause any harm. I don't need to use now if I'm running Skyrim alone, because of the performance increase. I'm now using it with both Skyrim and the CK and a lot of other windows opened at the same time (3.5 Gb ram), and the stability is perfect.
