"Push" In Texas Hold'em

Post » Sat Jan 19, 2013 10:08 pm

Hey guys; had an account back in the dark ages but I couldn't get into it, so I just made a new one (so I'm not really new, lol). I had a random question that came up because me and some friends were playing poker last night; only one of us seemed to know most of the rules.

So, my friend and I both have one king, and a king is within the 5 cards on the table. We both have a pair of kings, and nothing else. My second card is a queen and his is a seven or something. Me and my other friends assumed I won, since my other card is higher, but he insisted that it's a "push" and the pot is split. So who's right? I'm sure he knows the rules well and conducted the game well, but we know him well and know he can come up with things and think they're concrete facts, lol.

You're right because you have 1 Pair, Queen High, and he has 1 Pair, 7 High. At least that's how I was always taught.

It goes to you, as you had the next highest single. There is no pushing in Texas Hold 'em, and the guy was trying to trick you all. The only "push" there is is the blinds take back their chips when everyone else folds and it goes to the small blind to make the decision.

Queen high wins unless you both fill your hands from the table.

When betting with friends, I always bring rules if they don't have any and make sure that everyone playing agrees on them first.

People will make some serious [censored] up.

Yeah, one of my friends who had never played before said that the first rule she read was that high cards determine the winner if two people have the exact same hand; of course there was nothing about a push in the rulebook, lol. We didn't play with real money, just chips, so no one was gypped.
