PvP Isnt Just GW2 FactionVFactionVFaction Siege Clone Is It?

Post » Mon Feb 04, 2013 4:25 am

This is a real thread, it is not a troll.

You guys arent just making PvP a faction vs faction vs faction fortress siege where its very impersonal and where victory just relies on who has more numbers, not skill etc, are youse?

I mean, that has its place ***Also***...

But is there general open world pvp as well? you know, your adventuring and you come across someone from another faction and they you, and you get that excitement and adrenaline rush and proceed into some epic 1v1 battle. Or escape a 1v2 or more, or even win it due to awesome pvp mechanics and just being highly skilled enough and maybe a little luck on the things your opponents did wrong. Having the skill to read eachothers skill sets and fighting style and adapting on the fly to see who emerges the victor, to make for awesome enjoyment fun and epic stories to tell your mates for years to come. But most importantly, not only to help this game to become the household name it already is going to be, but helping it stay there also. Unlike, say, star wars.....

Because i havent found anything that says as much yet.

Or is it just going to be a FvFvF one area (the middle of the map) game of who has larger numbers, stalemates and impersonal wars that doesnt accomplish much and that you cant take pride in after having beat people?

Cause this game definitely has the potential for the above mentioned pvp, which guaranteed will definitely increase ESO's survivability and popularity by an unimaginable amount and just make it awesome in general, also remember where people turn to after getting to the "endgame"...

Also keep in my mind no brand name is immortal, no matter how big and well done, hem.. star wars hem...

The only PvP will be in Cyrodill. It will be open world.

Heh, the way people describe it, sounded like an instanced battleground lol.

It would be awesome if people could stop saying ESO's PvP is "like GW2's" because frankly that's insulting ESO.

GW2's PvP was a cheap knockoff of Dark Age of Camelot's 3 sided PvP, which was the game that created 3 sided warfare.

ESO's PvP is like DAoC (to correct everybody) and since it's being built by the original lead designer for DAoC and the father of 3 sded faction warfare then there's really no need to worry, the PvP will be fantastic no doubts.

Because it was an instanced battleground, it was not attached to the actual GW2 world so it was not in fact open world pvp no matter what people choose to believe, it was instanced 100% you had to enter into a que then a loading screen into a mini world for it, how is that not instanced lol and then a warpgate at your base to get back out into the *actual* world, it was just bigger than usual and had multiple fortresses castles and a few different pathways for a bit of option of where to attack, thats all.

Hope cyrodiils a big place or pvp is going to fail hard before to long, the big war thing sounds awesome in theory, but we have already seen it play out, and inevitably fail......

Clearly, you've never played DaoC.

Lol it's fine, since DAoC is old and GW2 new it's kind of normal for people to associate 3 sided warfare with GW2, I just like to remind people of where that originally came from is all :P

Cyrodill is its own zone as well. There is a loading screen between Cyrodill and the rest of the world. You will probably have to join a queue to get in. You're definitely not just going to be able to walk in and PvP straight like that.

But at least that zone fits into the real world, is even on the map, cant say the same for GW2 PvP instance...

But anyway, so it is basically going to be a GW2/DAoC setup? didnt they see how wrong it went in GW2? godamn it must have been completely mind blowing in DAoC for them to overlook how it went in GW2, and i doubt those 2 are so very different, heres to hoping....

Will have to see how this plays out but its not looking very good....

P.S yes i have not played DAoC, so at least i have some sort of hope to cling to lol

As I kind of said before, GW2's system was a pathetically cheap knockoff and a failed imitation attempt at copying DAoC's amazing PvP. Don't judge it whatsoever on GW2's, just ignore that and sweep it under the rug like it never existed because it was seriously a disgrace.

We also have Matt Firor as the project head for ESO, the man who created DAoC's amazing PvP so while it may not be wise to trust him with everything, creating a great PvP experience is one thing you can count on him to do right.

Ah ok, i missed the first time you said that, about GW2 lol awesome, hope raised that much more.

Although, the more i read in forums the more this is sounding more like a DAoC 2 than TES. what with *exactly* same pvp setup mechanics and general gameplay and then faction territory lockouts *exactly* like DAoC and whatever else i havent found out yet.

But not to worry, im going to stay optimisitc and look at it as DAoC must have been so mind blowingly awesome that it deserves to also be in an online TES or something along the lines.

Scratch that, couldnt care less if the mass pvp is awesome or worse than GW2, i doubt ill partake for long, just doesnt interest me unless its more personal 1v1 or you know, smaller group where it actually matters and not so much of a numbers game, and where skill is more important etc

Hope they have enough land around the main hub of cyrodiil to still get your more personal unique PvP, which coincedentally is what actual PvP is: Player vs Player not RvRvR or FvFvF.

Well a lot of people seem to be focused solely on the fortress battles(good for big battles)... there are also resource areas supplying the fortresses(good for medium sized battles)... and also conveys you can attack(good for solo/small groups)... as well as quest that can be done either solo or groups so you'll also have people wandering around(good for ganking).

Seriously some people need to take the blinkers off and look at the bigger picture.

Guild wars 2 is technically copying ESO by proxy if you think about it, since the original creator of DAoC which GW2 is based on brought that model here after making it. (Transitive property, yay math!)

The DAoC model was far more superior. Actually, almost everything is better than GW2. It did a poor job of representing RvRvR combat.

ONE of the original creators of DAoC. A project as large as a MMO has many contributors - I don't think it does the team justice to give one person full credit. He was a producer that helped design, a producer has many responsibilities.

Personally I think GW2 did a good job. They have some corners to round but it's a good game imo. Currently they are the 2nd most played MMO. I have a feeling in the next few years this game will grow to it's full potential. I think you might be over estimating ESO if you think a new game is going to come out perfect. They would be lucky to be as half as successful as GW2 (successful as in making money, not if you liked it or not).

DAoC 3 faction PvP was a legend. The problem with legends is that they become bigger than what they actually were. The market has changed, the players has changed, the development team is different... I see little chance of them recreating exactly what DAoC had. They have the same odds as everyone else trying to recreate WoW.

I can only credit him because we're talking about ESO and he's the only one here for that team, so it's like the director accepting the golden globe for the whole crew! :bunny:

While we are all praising Matt Firor for DAoC we all tend to not mention Mark Jacobs who along with Firor was the other lead designer in Dark Age of Camelot. Mark Jacobs, he of Warhammer Online fame, the one game that still holds the record for fastest uninstall off my PC. Warhammer Online, with all its praise prior to its release, failed dismally. I believe Mark Jacobs is now making games for phones.

I'm sure PvP will be great, no doubt, it has Matt Firor behind it and he's pretty well experienced.
My only problem will be if Cyrodiil isn't big enough...
Cyrodiil in Oblivion was HUGE, I basically want to see the Cyrodiil I saw in Oblivion but with PvP, a few differences is okay.
But still, whenever I imagine it I just think of it being really small and trimmed down just to make people focus on PvP objectives...

Yeah it faildn but not because of the PvP. It failed, because it was buggy, unbalanced and the server crashed to often! The lore and game feeling are briliant, WAR was the first game where i loved it to quest as an greenskin.

GW2 failed by design, who in hell design a massiv RvRvR game in mind, with an engine that can only support 40people on screen. Ah i know ANET, and that is why GW2 RvR failed, you can't see you enemy you can't fight him.

Well, so far from what we've been told the game area of Cyrodiil is as big, if not slightly bigger than Oblivion. Gotta remember there's a lot more going on in Cyrodiil then just the fortresses. Honetly am I the oly one rmembering strategic/resourse sights supporting fortresses? Convey raids? Open dungeons? Questing?
