My Quakecon Gameplay Impression

Post » Tue Aug 06, 2013 9:23 am

I've been super critical of ESO
Especially after they banned my first post on these forums a year ago

Anyways finally I got to see a real gameplay at Quakecon 2013
Here's my impressions

I was blown away with the graphics and theme
Finally a non-cartoony MMO
An MMO themed on Skyrim graphics and content
An MMO you can play with pride and not be embarrassed to show other advlts

The UI looked really polished with them dark overlays like a tweaked version of Skyrim
I am really psyched for this game now
But I'm also really concerned
I am writing this article not to attack ESO but in hopes they will make it better
I will just raise 3 big issues

Show your support or attack me
whatever

1. Instanced Loot is weak
Monsters should only have 1 loot table

Bring back some competition between players
And give us a reason to explore and attack first
To take on beasts solo to acquire their loot just for ourselves
Greed is a rewarding trait
Give some meaning back to grouping up to take on those harder elite monsters
With phased loot tables

There is no point its all just too easy
Everyone can just beat on the same mobs all day
Grouped or ungrouped everyone wins
Especially with phased servers
There is always going to be some random mofo phasing in and running up to beat on your mobs
Its weak

2. Floaty combat is not great
The glow on targeted enemies needs to b toned way down
They looked like transparent phantoms rather than real enemies
Not sure whats worse that or the
way the they flop down like pancakes
And then flip back up like they are michael jackson
At least give them a realistic animation and have them stagger or fall to a knee

3. Damage numbers and meters
If nothing else

We need an option to show damage against the enemies health bar

It can be done well like in Dark Souls you are able to judge the enemies health pool and your attack damage
We need damage meters for groups so you can see how you fair to other players
Without meters you have no idea
And that devalues your role in a group

And PVE becomes a very weak experience
All blame will be attributed to players with the least gear
With no way for you to prove your skill
Your entire worth will be judged based on your gear
That's the facts

Not only that why even bother spamming 15 key combinations with weapon swaps and rare potions
When they guy next to you is playing with 1 hand while eating a cheeseburger
Without damage meters no one will ever know or care
It really takes a huge motivation factor and energy level out of raiding

But having said that I really was impressed!

If they can delete all the Guild Wars 2 garbage we might have a game on our hands!

My first impression of your post is that the colors need to go. It's annoying and distracts from whatever the message is supposed to be.

Just to clarify... ESO has no connection to the Moderators of this forum.
Your past topics were closed for not following the forum rules.

That's all :)

Can you stop using different colors. It's really distracting and makes me not want to read anything you write at all. I don't know why people can't just use the standard white font.

I read your concerns. I share some of them.

Your post is formatted terribly and the colors make it a pain in the ass to read.

Starting a new line everytike you end a sentence is not the best formating.

Punctuation is your friend.

Welcome to the forums.

Someone give him a fishy stick.

Quakecon didn't exactly do the game justice. It was amazing but they just did 1 dungeon raid.

First, there is absolutely no reason to change the colors in your posts. Especially with every paragraph. It makes it really hard to read, it wastes your time, and its probably going to cause a lot of people to just ignore your post out right.

Second, respectfully, I disagree with almost everything you said. Instanced loot is way way way better. It prevents fighting and promotes a sense of community. Its necessary in a game where everyone gets XP for killing a mob, even if they aren't grouped.

They have said that there will be some type of leader boards which most people assume include damage meters. Numbers floating over the mobs head though is ugly and unnecessary. But you will be able to add it later with UI mods.

The only thing I agree with is the floaty combat. I don't like the glow as it is now either. Strikes still don't have that much impact. Do note though that they've improved it from earlier builds by making mobs turn and recoil when they get hit. Hopefully the sound effects aren't a finished project yet either because they could certainly make those more meaty.

Just remember that there is no collision detection in the game. In order to add "weight" to hits, they need to add animations. That's because, technically, you aren't hitting your enemy.

I disagree with all three of your points.

1. Greed is not good. If loot only went to whoever attacked first,

no one would help anyone kill anything. You're dieing? Oh, well too bad,

I won't get any loot if I help you. And then there's rolling on gear you don't

actually need in dungeons.

2. The outline is neccessary.

Without it, good luck in PvP or in areas with loads of

monsters. The game is in closed beta, animations are being worked on

still.

3. No, then we will get

"Your DPS svcks /kick" in dungeons.

I don't agree with much of what you have said...

I think i would prefer it if at least rare loot or boss loot was not instanced ... Instance all the junk loot so everyone can make some coin during a dungeon run, but i would probably prefer it if they make it a little bit more exciting by winning rare loot... or at least having a nice person offer it to them... i don't think community is made by everyone just getting stuff just because... i think community is built over time by realising the good people people are sharing people... and realising the not so good people are greedy b@strds... the greedy ones deserve to end up on their lonesome...

The outline is crappy... it is needed for sure but if that is the way they are going to do it they need to fix it because it destroys the enjoyment of the graphics almost 100% (for me anyways) hopefully as other people have said on other threads it will have a way to reduce its intensity...

I dont like the idea of anyone getting kicked out for doing not enough DPS... i don't know anyone who really does that though... but what i do know is if a group tried to kick someone out for not enough DPS and i was in it i wouldn't cast a vote to kick... and i don't think most people would. This being said more to the point i don't want floating damage numbers pouring out of mobs that just looks stupid and is as stupid looking as the red outline... but i don't think having the option to monitor your damage through another means and even other peoples damage for that matter (if you really want to) can hurt.

There are many greedy players, and many players who want loot but lose rolls. Players shouldn't fight each other over loot, they should fight monsters for loot. Many people may not kick, but many people will mock the person doing low DPS. And even if they don't do it out-right, they will think to themselves "Wow, this guy really svcks." Also, some players may be angered they're not doing as much damage as everyone else.

1. I'll take instanced loot any day over the usual need/greed/pass popup every three seconds, loot ninjas, "don't loot while we're fighting", "why'd you roll on that! you can't use it", B.S. thanks! I already have kids, so spare me from having to deal with little internet hershey-squirts that roll "need" on everything, I'm beyond done with that crap.

2. The outline doesn't bother me much...this can be easily changed. "Weighty" combat means jack squat to me in comparison to freedom of movement and character control. Nothing annoys me more than my character being rooted while animations finish, all in the name of feeling "weighty". It might work ok in a single player game, but svcks in an MMO...nah, screw that, it svcks all the way around. So many people sang the praises of the weighty combat in Neverwinter...I hated it, especially when playing a tank -- it felt jerky and limiting, and taking damage or dying because you're stuck in some stupid animation is not my idea of fun...maybe they've made it better or "fixed" it since I played...but at this point I couldn't care less.

However, that's not to say that I don't like some visual feedback to my actions, and I agree that a good portion of the battle animations looked a little odd (especially the flapjack of death...), so yes, I do hope they improve the animations, and continue to emphasize visual reactions to the player's actions, but not at the cost of character control.

3. DPS meters and the like can go the way of non-instanced loot...down the poop-chute of crappy game design and epeens. Damage meters always go hand-in-hand with stupid gear requirements and dps gates in fights...that's just lazy design and translates into bad gameplay.

I disagree with the first point. You need instanced loot in a non-PvP environment, because you can't kill the jerk who just snatched the loot out from under you. If another player is able to impose a cost or a loss on you, you need to be able to at least try to kill them for it.

I hate the outlines, too. While they may be needed in PvP, I'd prefer to dispense with them in PvE. For all I know, you can.

As to the third point, I'm indifferent as long as you can turn the numbers off. I tend to solo anyway so all of the meta-game crap doesn't interest me.

the "you cant use it" line doesn't really apply in this game...
