I met this dog which I had to take to his master in Haegar's Shame. But since I was doing something else at the time, I just ignored the mutt.

Now, I'm trying to do this quest and I can't find the dog. I went to Haegar's Shame hoping I'd meet the dog there, but to no avail.

Apparently, I've got to travel with the dog to Haegar's Shame. But how can I travel with him if he's disappeared?

Is this a bug and a broken quest?

Do you have another dog companion following you? I've found that Barbas won't show, at least initially, if you have a dog following you currently. Once I told mine (Meeko) to wait someplace, Barbas showed up. It might be the same at Haemar's Shame.

Also, when I did that quest I followed Barbas straight there--he went inside the cave without stopping, and when I went in after him he'd somehow managed to get several rooms ahead. I suspect it relates to the glitch where companions/followers will occasionally enter a cell through the wrong load door. He may be waiting for you inside or at the "end goal" at the end of the dungeon. Have you checked inside at all?

No, I didn't have another dog companion following me and I did manage to meet Barbas. I can't remember the exact dialog, but he just wandered off afterwards. But I'll follow your advice and go deeper into the cave to see if he is waiting for me there.

I did this quest weeks after getting it, both real time and game time. The dog is not inside the cave, but at the map marker when you activate the quest. It also helps to use the local map when finding the spot. Once there, wait an hour or two if the dog does not show up.

The Wiki says the quest giver hands you some Fresh Meat as bait, I don't remember using that, or if I even got it when the quest was given to me. Perhaps I had some other food at the time.

1. It's "Haemar's Shame," not "Haegar's Shame."

2. If the quest is active, a map marker will show Barbas' current position. Once he enters Haemar's Shame, he will not wait for you and can be found at the shrine of Clavicus Vile, even if there are enemies nearby. As he is essential, he can not be killed by the occupants of the cave. Follow the quest marker to the shrine deep within the cave and you'll find Barbas. In any event, his only purpose for this part of the quest is to lead you to the shrine, which you can find with or without him.
