My lockpick level is 29 and i'm trying to open an expert level chest. I cane very close a couple of times, but couldn't finish it off. Am Is this even possible, or can it not be done? I've tried a lot on thus chest and at least its helped me raise my lockpick level lol.

It is possible to open any level lock at any level of skill. How tiny the "sweet spot" on the lock is just gets much smaller and smaller depending on the difference between the lock level and your skill. Your lockpicks will also break more easily.

So really, you could open a Master level lock right after starting the game, but you would end up using a bazillion lockpicks to find the sweet spot and open the lock, since every probe would snap the pick and being even a hair off would prevent the lock from opening.

On the plus side, the higher the level of lock you open above your skill level, the more it increases your lockpick skill.
