hi, to anyone that knows much about ssd drives id like to ask a question. how long would this ssd last in my ps3.
http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/vtx3-25sat3-vertex-60gb-sata3-p-53286.html?sort=2a
does ps3 use the hardrive alot, or will it last a long time. also is this a good ssd. thanks
This drive it overkill... It costs more for the SATA 3 speeds, but the PS3 only has a SATA 1 controller...
I bought http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/OCZ-Agility-3-60GB-2-5-SATA3-SSD-AGT3-25SAT3-60G-/290625560756?pt=AU_Components&hash=item43aaa220b4#ht_746wt_913 for my PS3...
it's a 60GB OCZ Agility 2... It has SATA 2 which will max out the PS3's data transfer rate, rather than falling under like a SATA 1 would... If it's only for the PS3, then you only need SATA II, but you if plan on using it in a PC or laptop in the near future (maybe even the PS4, maybe?) the go for the SATA III
Now to answer your question... SSDs are NAND flash, like a USB flash drive... They only have 10,000 write cycles (that means data can only be written over 10,000 times) until that block is disabled... Depending on what you do with your PS3 will lengthen or shorten the SSDs life... Downloading big demos, etc... Installing and deleting game installs, etc... They will shorten it's life... HDD cache intensive games will shorten it too... But remember that it's 10,000 write cycles. That means that if you almost filled your SSD with games and only left a small amount for caching, save files,etc... Then it would eat through that small chunk pretty quick... So keep only a few games on there that you play regularly and leave a bit (or else when your 'cache' gets small, just delete a game to give it more room)
The other thing to note it that drive you linked has a 3 year warranty...
Hope this helps and feel free to ask more questions if you want...
EDIT: I was wrong, the very old SSDs had 10,000 write cycles, newer ones have 100,000s to millions...
