Question for fellow RPers.

Post » Wed Dec 05, 2012 11:34 pm

When you die and the game loads from the latest save , do you feel that this ruins the immersion and makes you invincible? I mean, how do you RP if you already tried to fight a monster , it killed you and you reload and try again?

thanks

Yeah. You could always go 'Dead is Dead'.

think of it as a dragonborn thing that u get visions sometimes of a situation ending badly. Think of it as premonition with visions.

Not really - but then, I'm a bit over-cautious, so my characters rarely die. I don't go into a dungeon unless I'm certain my character can handle it

As others have suggested, a 'Dead is Dead' playthrough might be your thing. I remember a user on the forum saying that they saved every time their character went to bed - if the character died, they'd re-load to the 'sleep save' and the character would think it was just a nightmare.

Doesn't bother me at all. If it did, I'd play dead-is-dead. As it is, I get too attatched to my RP characters to simply let them die.

I sometimes have trouble with this, yes. Sometimes not. It depends a lot on the specifics of the situation. One thing I have begun to do, when it feels odd to go right back into the game, is take a break for a few minutes, or even a few hours. I will browse the forums here, go for a walk, anything. When I come back to the game my memory of the event is not so fresh and I am more ready to continue with my last save.

I simply go on as if that last playthrough never actually happened, like a dream or a foresight from prophecy.

I RP just as much as the next guy, but I have to admit, this sort of thing never has really troubled me.

Most of the time, the death of my character is usually because of some bone-headed mistake or oversight on my part, not because the

thing I'm fighting is stronger or more powerful. Why should my Dunmer warrior be penalized because I svck sometimes at gameplay.

I've never really had the OP's problem, but this sounds like a reasonable thing. penalize you a bit because you have to reload where you last slept, but it kind of makes sense. I might use this idea later.

Hm, that reminds me of the new Sherlock Holmes movies, where Robert Downey Jr. is capable of foresight, since Sherlock is one of the smartest men in that fictional world. However, it being a blessing from Akatosh would make a bit more sense, instead of just instinct. The gift of the Greybeards when they name you Ysmir Stormcrown, or using it from absorbing the souls of dragons.

Agreed. IMO, that's not really "roleplay". Just as I wouldn't use player knowledge to give my character an unfair advantage, neither would I penalize my character because I was too dumb to chug a health potion. Getting owned by an ancient dragon is one thing - getting criticaled by a bandit thug when you're not paying attention is another.

Reloading when killed in battle and avoiding the fight, in my mind, is just your character being cautious. Like you would in real life.

I agree with you. You go through various trials in reality, so why not go through them in game, if you were that ideal to RPing.

Personally I don't consider this to be a 'roleplaying' issue. To me this is an 'immersion' issue.

When I see the same events or read the same dialogue a second time it can take me out of the moment, remind me I'm playing a game. It's a bit like stopping a movie, rewinding, and watching the actors play a scene a second time. In both cases I find it's easy to lose my emotional connection to what's going on. That's why I said that sometimes I find it's better if I pause for a few minutes and make a fresh start later.
