A Question for the Developers

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 2:32 am

hey there, i absolutely cant wait for Dishonored!! i have a quick question for the developers on gameplay (ive been contemplating scenarios in my head lol), when you possess an npc, cause a scene/distraction for the benefit of the guards and then blink to the other side of, lets say a courtyard, will you blink as Corvo or the npc? thanks for your time

I've been left with the impression that you can't use other supernatural abilities while you're using possession.

You have to unpossess the NPC before you can use supernatural abilities

Ok heres another question... how do you tackle the issue of corvo being superhumanly powerful. I mean you can possess, blink, freeze time etc. How do you prevent corvo being a GOD after a few level ups? I mean i do want my character to be powerful in the end, but take for example assassins creed. As soon as i figured out the fighting buttons and timings, I literally can do whatever i want. i could cause a huge massacre around town and nobody's there to stop me!

i suppose you'll have that chaos system in place to balance violence out, but when you've got goku's kamehameha at your finger tips, who's the npc gonna call?

Each power has two tiers, as far as I can tell. For instance, Bend Time's first tier is Slow Time, and the second tier is Stop Time. So while you do have nifty powers, early on you aren't going to be a demigod. And I presume that later on you'll be up against more powerful enemies.

So Corvo's power vs the world's danger should be fairly balanced throughout.

Cool, but what about going around doing huge massacres mission after mission? like gta, are the armed forces going to come down on you? im sure someone high up would notice if you're running around trigger happy in their building complex. what i mean is that I'm happy to be able to have to fight armed forces from time to time for fun, but it would not be immersive if i could dragon ball z every single mission. I mean, hey if i could have done that, why bother with stealth and politics? Corvo might as well call himself thor right from the start.

i understand its just a game in the end, but hey, I really love immersive games.

I dont think you'll be able to just Hulk your way through an entire mission. Its probaly balanced in such a way where if you take on more guys then you can handle, say 5+, you are in for the one hell of a fight.

And it seems that those guards that are on those weird Doctor Octopus machines are pretty tough.

For balancing, I'm guessing possession negates the ability to use powers. Just a guess, though.

On the wiki it seened like you could only possess certain humans (civilians, guards, Tall Boys) which is pretty lame. If you can posses one, why not all?
So, what I want to know is can you possess a target, perform the assassination by jumping off a ledge, unpossess then blink into another target so you don't splatter all over the ground? That'd be sweet.

You can possess all living things.

You can do that as well. Apparently, the gameplay shown to the media-sites had a scenario in which Corvo jumped from a balcony and possessed a guard stationed on the ground. This does make me wonder, though, what happens to Corvo's physical presence (i.e. his body) when he possess his victims?

Hi, i also have a "possession related" question for the developers.
Recent previews confirm that you can posses any living being, animal and humans alike (even fishes), so the question is: can Corvo also posses birds or that would make navigating the city too easy?

I wonder about that, too. They haven't mentioned birds at all, yet. At first I thought, Well, maybe there aren't birds in this world. But there are. So ...

well that would be really cool, and BTW I think the possession last only for a few sec. or something, so it isn't that easy.

I thought that the time limit of Possession was determined by mana/magic: the more mana/magic you have the longer you can posses, and vice versa the less mana/magic you have the less Possesion will last....much like Mind Control In Blood Omen.
For instance I read you can control rats and infiltrate buildings with them but if Possession coudl last only few moments/seconds that would not be possible at all.

Ok, size seems to the key limitation for the Possession (the bigger the being possessed the shorter it will last) but possessing birds coudl be feasible; birds are not big as wolves and not as small as rats so they are a "in-between" animal: surely possession would not last indefinitely but coudl last long enough to let us travel mid-long distances.
What do you think?

P.S.
In Blood Omen you coudl transform into a wolf and it was great ;)

I see your point now, and I am starting to wonder the same, let's hope the developers don't remove birds from the game to avoid such a thing. :D

That's probably one of the things that they are tweaking right now. The possession duration of birds would have to be just long enough to be useful without trivalizing the level. Too long, and it's overpowered, too short, and it's useless. I too would hate for them to remove birds, or make them un-possessable.

He either disappears or "enters" his victims body. When he unpossesses a victim, his body comes out through the victim's mouth

So are there any animals that you can possess besides: rats, fish, and maybe birds. I know you can use humans.

I'd like to see cats and dogs be possessable, but we don't know if there are any. It's not exactly like earth after all.

I've been curious about what happens to Corvo when a possession takes place also. Since it's been brought up, in Blood Omen a shield would surround Kain's body and possession lasts until mana disappears. We know about duration (basically) but not his body itself.

In terms of birds, maybe possession also has to do with line of sight. Rats are plentiful given the theme of the game so you'll probably be able to possess one without much fuss. Birds might be too fast though to get a bead on. That's how I'd handle explanation anyway if birds turn out to be a no-go :P
