Consider yourselves lucky, I lost Adrianne in Whiterun in one game, as well as Amren, and I was nowhere near Whiterun, just got inheritance letters from couriers while travelling. In another game I lost Balimund on my way to bring him his salts.
I have to say, though, I definitely DO NOT see this as a "pain", "glitch", or even, as some people have said, "stupid". People die, people die all of the time. Why shouldn't your character feel that pain? That loss? I know that, for me, it actually makes the game more real, more personal. For example, with Balimund... the character in question barely knew him. They'd talk and barter, and she agreed to find some fire salts for him. Then she became involved with the Dawnguard, forgot about Balimund and his forge and the salts... But on the way back from a mission, she decided she'd stop in Riften and sell off some goods... which made her remember the fire salts... she'd gathered 10, so she's on her way to give them to Balimund and he's being felled by a vampire... CLASSIC. Sad, sure, but a classic Skyrim moment nonetheless.
