Questions on Marriage.

Post » Wed Aug 29, 2012 4:36 pm

I've never been married before in Skyrim. I've seen a bit about it, but I don't know much.

I have a few questions that some of you can probably answer.

1. If you marry someone who isn't a follower, can they now follow you?

2. If you marry someone who wears clothing instead of armor, can you give them clothes to change into, or are you taking them "as is?"

3. In response to question #2, I'm pretty sure they need to be a follower to trade clothes with them, so are there any female followers that are wearing regular clothing if they CAN change into other clothes?

4. A follower that is married to you is a great option to have, but can they still die?

That's all I can think of.

1. No
2. No
3. No
4. Yes.

Sadly NPCs will only equip something if it has a higher armor rating, if it's clothing and has no rating they won't put it on.

What if I enchanted the piece of clothing?

Would killing my spouse be considered a divorce? Someone clarify...

Spouses who are not already part of the potential follower faction will not become followers if you marry them.

Barring mods and use of console commands, the only way I know of to change the clothing of a non-follower spouse is to pickpocket and reverse pickpocket as needed. High pickpocketing skill + perks might be required, I dunno. I don't do much pickpocketing.

Some followers like mages don't wear armor, but they're usually in some type of mage robe. I don't know of any potential followers who don't wear some kind of armor or mage apparel. Followers will always equip whatever they think is the "best" apparel in terms of protection no matter what you give them (again, barring mods or console commands).

Yes, they can still die if they are not essential. An NPC who is not essential will not become essential because you marry them.

You kill a spouse, and you're single for life.

No, killing someone would be considered murder, altho Skyrim is a bit more lax about how it handles these things than the real world usually is.

You can't remarry even if your spouse dies, so you don't have much to gain from it anyway.

That might just work, but I'd have to test it out first.

3. Someone who's both your spouse AND your follower can equip anything, but there is a trick to it.
First, give them better armor than their default. Second, when they equip it, open the shop and buy their default armor - let them keep one piece though, for instance their boots, or they will revert back to default immediately.
Third, go back to "I need to trade some things...", take away the armor you gave them and replace it with whatever you want them to wear.

Enchanting things won't work, it's the armor rating that matters. A mage might switch between a default hood and a circlet, though.

Hopefully UFO will work with Hearthfire.

Took theses steps. (Lydia)

1. Replaced original armor with Orcish Armor, Dwarven Boots/Gloves
2. Bought original armor (Steel Gloves/Boots)
3. Traded Fine Clothing
4. Took off Armor

Didn't work.

But it seems as you replace her entire equipment - armor, boots AND gloves - then they will revert back as I described above. Try again but let her keep her original boots. It should work.

Wait. Nevermind. I bought her boots too. I would have sent this message sooner, but I had a fun time playing Dress-Up with Lydia. Lol! Thanks! :D
