Quick Question about learning new shouts

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 7:14 am

Hi Everyone,

I had a quick question pertaining to shouts. I have done my fair share of exploring the vast world of skyrim, and in my travels I have come across a few word walls where it appears as if I have acquired a new shout. However, whenever I go to look in my magic menu under shouts I only see a very small selection of the shouts I acquired on the main story line. I have been around 4-5 word walls and received the text in the upper left telling me I learned a new spell, but only have three shouts. Spoilers aside do i need to continue to a certain point on the main story-line in order to obtain new shout powers? Thank You.

When you get a new shout, you need to unlock it with a dragon soul (you get one each time you kill a dragon or are present when someone else kills a dragon). However, if they're not even there to be unlocked, you've probably encountered a bug.

No.

The main story does have 2 or 3 unqiue shouts, but the rest are in walls and whatnot.

The thing you're experiencing is that each shout has 3 levels, or 3 "words".

You might get the first word from Wall A, and the second word from Wall B, and so on and so forth.

Notice when learning a new word it may say something like: "New shout aquired - Find, Aura Whisper" and the next word would be "New shout aquired - Feel, Aura Whisper".

so are you saying each word has 3 walls to fully unlock that word ?

i was wondering why on the main quest early on when i went up to the greybeards,**SPOILER** they gave me the whirlwind sprint shout. but then an hour later while doing a side quest i found a wall with the whirlwind shout again.

Yeah, that means you have two words for that shout. If you hold the shout button down for longer, you'll use more of the shout's words. That way, you're using a more powerful version of that shout, but it will be longer before you can use the shout again.

Edit: For example, for the Unrelenting Force shout, just tapping the shout button will say "Fus", and your enemy will be staggered. Hold it down for longer, though, and you'll say "Fus Ro", shoving the enemy back with more force. If you say all three words, "Fus Ro Dah", you'll send the enemy flying backward, but it'll be a while before you can use any shouts again.

Additionally, when you look at the shout in the magic menu the numbers at the bottom are the duration (in seconds, I believe) of the cool down for shouting one, two or three words.

Ah, thank you. So if I understand this correctly the words I acquired were most likely the second or third in the series? Thus I am not able to utilize the shout until I discover the basic foundation of the word? If this is the case is there a way to view which words you have acquired but are unable to use, because right now I can only see the main story-line shouts.

Bumpity Bump Bump, anyone able to verify that some word walls yield higher tiered versions of a shout? Explaining the reason why I can not see some of the shouts I supposedly have acquired?
