It's quiet... too quiet...

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 3:03 pm

Does anyone find the game to be quite quiet and therefore boring as you run through the land? When I am able to hear the soundtrack it is nice and I enjoy it as I enjoy all TES music, but it seems to not be played very often outside of town while NOT in a battle. And when it does it is pretty quiet.
I actually have all the sound levels, besides Music and Dialog, set down so that when I turn up my volume I don't make myself deaf when hearing a lightning bolt being shot at me. The only tracks that I can hear often are some tracks in town and battle.
Is there a way to fix this? By the way, I use speakers, not headphones.

Wow no one replied to this? I mean, its the one thread where people aren't complaining about how the Forums aren't Kumbya :teehee:

Hey remember the Ambience like wind, Birds and wildlif calls are under sound effects, if thats low your not really gonna hear much if I understand the sound system correctly

I love ambient noise, it does seem like the music glitches and plays at weird intervals and it is not consistent.

Since we are on the subject of sound. I found putting on head phones I can hear a lot more sounds, such as frogs, birds, crickets and other little sounds better.

It's quite interesting it hear it all when wandering the woods.

I'm 89.99% sure the pauses in the music is mean to give your ears a break, if I recall correctly the music in Oblivion and Morrowind Did NOT shut up lol

I've noticed this as well, there's also just less ambient noise I think, than in previous games.

yeah I guess there are less ambient noises than previous games maybe because Skyrim is a cold place?

I'm just waiting for some more music mods to come out.
Can't wait to get some power metal for the dragon fights!

Also, I have to blast my computer's volume up for some reason while playing Skyrim. Everything in-game is at max. Am I missing something?
It svcks when I stop playing and forget to turn it down again. I'll put on some music afterwards and get it blasting in my ears.

It seems to me that I experiences periods of twenty to thirty seconds at a time when my game is virtually silent. I experience it most often in the wilderness, away from waterfalls and other reliable noise sources, and in the short period between music cues. I don't even hear footsteps in my game.

I am beginning to think this might be worse for those of us who play in third person. I know that when I switch into first person I can hear my character's footsteps (softly, but they're there). Back in third person, all footstep sounds are gone.

It's the same with voices. Voices in my game are sometimes incredibly hard to hear. It seems as though the voices of quest-giving NPCs are lower in volume than the voices of NPCs talking randomly to each other, and of bards singing.

I play with my system turned to maximum volume, the game's Master slider at maximum, Footsteps and Voices at maximum, and Music and Effects turned down to about 1/4 (using a Creative X-Fi Xtreme card).

Someone needs to mod in snow-striders IMO.

Nope, I rather hear the silent noises while running across the hills. Adds much more atmosphere.

I turned off the music in OB using the INI or some such way. I played an entire character enjoying the sounds.
Now I find myself straining to hear the music in skyrim before I do such a thing. Perhaps I won't have too.

If I play with stereo speakers I cant hear anything, I don't know if I need a sub woofer. I play with surround sound head phones and the sound is a lot better. Even with head phones the balance is off, to here any relevant sounds I have to have the sound right up high. One problem with this is when a creature sneaks up on me it is brown trousers time.

Now that you mention it, I have the same problem/issue.

I'm out running around throughout the entire area, and rarely hear music.

Only time I hear some is when you get that little piece that plays right before the big old bad dragon drops on you.

I'll try to listen tonight and see if it's really that low, or there just isn't any at all.

Quiet? Not for me. I hear music almost all the time, but sometimes the music is ambient and not very noticable (but I like this, as it feels more natural). Also, the wind sounds and birds sounds and all nature sounds are just beautiful to listen too.

If things sound too quiet for you, it might be because Skyrim's sound is bugged for a lot of people. In fact, the majority of the PC users it seems have low sound. A temporarly fix for this on PC until Bethesda fixes it properly is to enable loudness equalization: http://static.reviewmylife.co.uk/2010/1112/loudness-equalization.jpg

I love ambient noises and subtle music. I find the "battle music" annoying.

I find there's plenty of ambient noise. Especially under a good set of headphones, the game really never shuts up.

The epic combat music starts only when facing higher level threats or when you have taken significant damage it seems. Every bandit triggers combat music for my 15 level mage. For my 81 level warrior, it is a 50% chance if I hear any from ancient dragons.

quite quiet

THANK YOU for spelling this correctly.

OT: I think it was done by design, so as to not detract too much from the awesome ambient sounds. As awesome as the soundtrack is, it would get really monotonous if it was constantly blaring out of your speakers.

That's a medieval game. It's quiet, you must hear the noise of the nature, the animals, the trees and the water....Not something like New York or S?o Paulo. That all you hear is:
-"Hey get look the dam Traffic sing!"
-"Fireworks at night"-BUm BUm bUm BUm]
-Screams on the other house/apartment
-Car honks.....
