Better graphics. Better sound. Better gunplay. It does need more content out of the box though and there is far too much backtracking. If ID would just fully commit to this IP it will only gain more popularity.

You can't really even compare graphics, I think both games had different goals in mind for them.

So that leaves us with post-apocalyptic wasteland and some driving stuff which also may or may not be comparable. They both come in boxes with colour pictures on the front too.
