AMD / ATi user chiming in (see my sig for hardware setup), here's my summary as of midnight EST after Rage decrypted and launched for the first time:

- Game decrypts just fine inside of ten minutes and launches fine. Menus looked OK and ran smoothly.

- First time in-game, the pre-rendered cinematic at the very beginning (showing Apothis hurtling towards Earth and the Eden Project going into effect) runs smooth with no hiccups or bad problems.

- In-game textures were OK in terms of appearance but I had a severe case of texture artifacts flickering on-screen along with NPCs, clutter, and weapons flickering in and out as well. There was also some significant vertical screen tearing that made moving around very hard to do. I quit the game completely and configure my Catalyst drivers manually to use 2x Antistropic filtering, 2x Anti-aliasing, force Vertical Refresh (a.k.a V-sync).

- Restarted game. No more screen-tearing but I was still getting nasty artifact flickering, so I quit again.

- Most recent fix stated to roll back my CCC drivers to ver. 11.8 and use the previous settings, sans the V-sync. Upon applying that fix, the game IS playable but still has lots of issues with texture pop-in and object occasionally disappearing and re-appearing. It's bearable, but it is a little annoying. Will try some remedies with video settings later tonight.

Log back into Steam and/or check the Recent News link - (to steampowered forums) there are a bunch of "fixes" people are offering, some about tweaking V-Sync, LOD, etc. from the display settings, others with "Launch Option" fixes .. go look in the steampowered forums for things to try,.. I'm stuck all day until I get home from work - I'm just pi$$ed that I spent half my night doing the first 3 missions due to lockups, crashes, and other random distortions... I HOPE that most of these issues will be addressed in updates, but right now I feel like I just had some Poo Stew... horrid aftertaste.

Quote: @CatalystCreator Don't use the current Rage performance driver - package includes very old files, that's why you're seeing corruption.

Follow @RAGEgame on Twitter for more Tweets about drivers, etc.

For nVidia users, the recently released 285.38 drivers seem to help from what I've been reading. I suggest those who use nVidia try those drivers.

Works perfectly for me and others. Some have tried these with no avail. Apparently not a 100% fix, obviously.

I just joined this mess...but, I had the benefit of reading the forums before I played. I expected the worst.

Specs:
i7 920
6GB RAM
Radeon HD 5870 1GB
Win7 64bit

Except for one major problem of screen flickering/tearing, it ran the engine "pretty well" from my point. I mean there was still some pop in, but only on the far left and right of my peripheral vision...as soon as I turn in either direction, the textures show up instantly. None of this serious lagging texture pop-in from the videos I've been seeing.

I have faith, and will wait a bit for the AMD fix...and (hopefully) dev fix.

No, but it never hurts to be up to date as much as you can.

I didn't start playing last night until a few hours after release so I read up on some of the issue ahead of time. I launched the game and saw noticeable texture pop, so I exited and updated my drivers to 11.10. I played a bit further last night and this morning, but was seeing additional issues: tearing, flickering, artifacts, even lighting issues/delayed updating. Reading around the web lead me to what appears to be a major improvement, at least for me.

What I did was rollback to 11.8 drivers. Then I forced VSync and triple buffering through the CCC while leaving most everything else to application control. Right now all my issues have cleared up except the texture pop. So at least its playable.

New AMD Driver coming Oct 6, according to this tweet: http://twitter.com/#!/Thollenshead/status/121729879417958400

Also, information from Gstaff and Nick Breckon regarding additional fixes:

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1236250-rage-support/page__view__findpost__p__18743528

Below are solutions that may resolve issues you're experiencing with screen tearing, as well as blurry textures + texture popping. If you're experiencing these issues, we recommend you try these one at a time. If for any reason your performance suffers, revert back to the prior settings.

Issues w/ screen tearing
RAGE currently does not have a menu option to turn V-sync on or off.

If the graphics driver supports a so called "swap-tear" extension then RAGE will use it and RAGE will V-sync when running >= 60 FPS and RAGE will tear when < 60 FPS. Unfortunately at the release of RAGE, none of the graphics drivers have the "swap-tear" extension enabled.

The user can force V-sync on or off in the graphics vendor control panel. Right-click on the desktop to access the graphics vendor control panel.
  • If V-sync is forced on then RAGE will always V-sync.
  • If V-sync is forced off then RAGE will auto-detect that V-sync is not working and RAGE will instead synchronize to real-time and screen tearing may occur.
Alternatively you can force V-sync on by adding the following to the RAGE launch options in Steam:

+r_swapInterval 1

The launch options can be found by right-clicking on RAGE in Steam and selecting "Properties". Then click on "Set Launch Options" in the dialog that pops up.

Blurry Textures and Texture Popping
The texture streaming is limited by the performance and number of cores of the main processor (CPU).

The higher the resolution at which the game renders and the higher the anti-aliasing setting, the more texture data is needed to texture the environment. If you do not have a high end CPU you may momentarily see blurrier textures and texture popping when the view changes quickly.

If you have a processor with few cores and you have a high end NVIDIA graphics card then you can try turning on the "GPU Transcode" menu option in the video settings menu in RAGE. By enabling this option a large percentage of the texture calculations are moved to the graphics\ processor (GPU). However, this option is not available on all graphics hardware and may not appear in the menu if your hardware does not support the necessary features.

On processors with few cores without the ability to turn on "GPU Transcode" you can significantly improve the texture streaming performance by adding the following to the RAGE launch options in Steam:

+vt_maxPPF 16

The launch options can be found by right-clicking on RAGE in Steam and selecting "Properties". Then click on "Set Launch Options" in the dialog that pops up.

If you have very few cores like a dual core processor then you can set a lower value like:

+vt_maxPPF 8

If setting these values does not improve the texture streaming performance for you then consider lowering the anti-aliasing setting in the video settings menu in RAGE.

You may, for instance, observe slow texture streaming at high resolutions like 2500 x 1600 with anti-aliasing set to 16X. In some cases lowering the anti-aliasing to 8X fixes the problem but lower settings may further improve the texture streaming. Alternatively, or in addition, you can lower the resolution.

We hope these help. The teams at id and Bethesda continue to work solutions to help you guys. More to come!

On a high end graphics card you can also change the size of the texture cache in video memory. However, on video cards with 512 MB of memory you may see a significant drop in performance. The size of the texture cache can be changed by adding the following to the RAGE launch options in Steam:

+vt_pageImageSizeUnique 8192
+vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly 8192
+vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly2 8192

By adding these settings to the RAGE launch options more texture data will stay in video memory which may not only reduce blurry textures and texture popping but will also allow complex scenes to be rendered with more texture detail.

NVIDIA has published a tweak guide which provides commands to enable GPU transcoding. Some of the tweaks in this guide are helpful for AMD users as well (excluding the transcoding part).

Hey guys,

As part of my job I write content for NVIDIA's GeForce.com, and today that's a quick guide for unlocking high res textures in Rage on the PC: http://www.geforce.com/News/articles/how-to-unlock-rages-high-resolution-textures-with-a-few-simple-tweaks (this works on both NVIDIA and AMD GPUs)

Our CMS is in the process of republishing the page because we've since tested the 16K stuff mentioned in the article and have found zero improvements going from 8K to 16K. To improve things further would require a texture pack, as mentioned once by John Carmack.

Thanks!
You can try this too http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1236250-rage-support/page__p__18743528#entry18743528 and there's even an experimental CUDA Core GPU Transcode tweak out there but I personally wouldn't recommend it until it's been tested further.
As Transcoding doesn't work on AMD cards, because they lack CUDA Cores, the only tweak in that section that will help is vt_maxPPF, unfortunately. As such, your Transcoding is being done entirely by your CPU, hence why AMD users are experiencing so many issues.

Update from DerrickG at VALVE, posted today at 12:32pm:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2159339

Almost all the issues with RAGE are hardware/driver related and not an issue with the game itself.

Please note the following from Bethesda:
  • ATI and NVIDIA are working on updated drivers that should be released today/tomorrow that will fix multiple issues.
  • Bethesda is working on an update to allow for users to customize their video options which will solve many of the issues users are having.
  • For the latest information please visit http://www.bethblog.com
Thank you for your patience with this matter. All parties are working as fast as they can to correct the problems with RAGE.
