Rain : We've come so far, and yet...

Post » Sat Dec 05, 2015 5:44 am

So, we now have rain and it doesn't clip through roofs! Awesome! We've finally done it! Or have we?

However, my other biggest issue with Fallout 4 (other than the Settlements) is one issue with the rain. Namely, that rain still produces a "wet" texture under any roof or ceiling irrespective of materials used. It'll happen in wooden shacks, it'll happen in reinforced concrete bunkers; if the area is classified as "outside", it'll get a full "wet" texture no matter what.

This needs fixing as it's phenomenally irritating and does far more to break immersion than a few glitchy enemy spawns or settlement issues. We're so close to having functional weather and being able to build shelter to protect us from such things. If a sense of survival was one of the central things that Bethesda wanted to invoke in it's audience, then please allow us to create a house where the inside is dry and provides some protection from radiation storms.

Anyone else noticing this as much as I am? It's been annoying since day 1.

Well, it took them ten years to fix the rain, i'm not exactly holding my breath :lmao:
But no worries, if it does not require changes in the engine itself, modders will have a solution in a week ^_^ After the tools are released, i mean.

I don't know. It's kind of realistic. I was ticked off about it too, until I looked up and noticed all the roofs DID have a bajillion holes and gaps in them.

The way I look at it.. None of the shelters/roofs you find are in that good of shape unless you are in a loaded interior. If you notice, you do see drips and what not when you are under cover. Everything is still going to get wet even if there's a roof because there are holes in the roof.. It works for me and doesn't feel unrealistic that you are going to get wet in a homemade shack.

I would of liked it better if the Radiation Storms actually produced acid rain that hurts the character while traveling out in the world.

To me, it's one of the things you can ignore. Some flaws are way worse.
I love the game, but when the glitch occurs where you can't pass a door because another person went through it makes me want to [censored] all over the game.

Recon Bunker Theta and Listening Post Bravo (and others) would like to have a word with you.

Pretty sure the reinforced concrete doesn't have holes in it.

Haha. Yeah. That one is very annoying. I sat for 30 seconds one time, waiting for the loading screen to appear, before I realized the door hadn't "activated", and I had to back up and try again. :nope:

Obviously you've never played the games where only "surface area" is applied. There's already a few games that do this. Admittedly, they're more focused on immersion and environment, but they're there. So "Just a game" is not a valid reason. And besides, if they can make blood show up on only certain areas of items (armor)/characters, logic dictates it's perfectly possible with tiles. Which also can have "blood spatter" as well as "rain spatter". It's just a question of making part of the tile change in tone (Making it look more squishy at top while remaining dark and untouched underneath). Or affecting only a part of the tile. Not such a difficult thing to do in games.

Well, not difficult for other games anyway. Looks like Beth are using "Single tiled textures" and forgot to add "Multiple sides to be affected by weather". Does it look wet on the surface yet dry underneath when a roof tile is on the roof? Because if that's the case it should be possible to get the same effect outside too. Just set it (The game engine which only devs control) so rain doesn't affect the "underneath" area. Should be possible I think.

Ah well. Mods I guess.

People saying it is realistic because roofs have holes in them.

First of all, there are also roofs with cloth. It shouldn't get that wet. But also, there are pre-built buildings with solid roofs that have no holes. The floor underneath that however still will get the wet looking texture.

It does bother me. Why? I want to feel dry and cozy in my home. What's the point of roofs if it doesn't protect you from rain and other things?

So yeah, I am very happy that rain doesn't clip through solid objects no more, but now we need a fix for the wet texture that appears during the rain.

must say however that Bethesda has done a great job with how things appear wet. It really does look wet and really nice. :)

I could see that happening if both storms crossed pathes . That would be both nasty and realistic.

I would've loved it if you got wet also from swimming. Skyrim and Oblivion mods did that pretty well.

I totally agree with this. What's the point of building a shelter or even putting a roof on your house if it doesn't actually do anything?

And the wet texture looks great. I just wish I could have a bed that wouldn't be soaking wet all the time. And then there's the electrics, that would pose a serious and lethal hazard in such weather. If people are claiming "realism" on the roofs with holes in, then surely unsecured live wires would result in the whole "toaster in a bath" effect, no?

Why can't we place wires under the ground again? Hell, we're using the build stuff ability to remove rubble in the fort in the blink of an eye. May as well.

I use Croup Manor, and I've repaired all the holes and gaps. The wet texture does not appear on any of my inside rooms when it rains.

Yeah, they are pretty harmless. Look nice, though.

Off topic, but can't wait to see what modders can do with the Radiation Storms. Hopefully something https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fXPxR3biFg ^_^

Blowout. Or Emission if you prefer (i don't :hehe:). Periodically radiation and psychic energy gets released violently from the center of the Zone; the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Beautiful, dangerous, and scary ^_^

Happens in the latter two STALKER games. That one was modded though, it's pretty tame in the base game. Well, looks-wise, it's still as dangerous.

It looks even scarier at night: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0Z6CxmiCwY
